Life insurance interview

First of all, for my dh’s job he has to take a lie detector test every so many years and he always has trouble passing. I used to light heartedly make fun of him for it, because he really is a very honest guy.

Now I know why it is hard. I just got off the phone with my medical interviewer and he made me feel like I was lying the whole time-and I wasn’t trying to. Now I am worried they will deny me insurance. For instance, later in the interview he asked why I was at the dermatologist and I said just a routine skin check and he removed a wart while I was there. Then he said he had asked me about that earlier and I answered “no†and he made me answer a bunch of questions about my wart. I’m not a medical person, so maybe some warts can be a big deal, but I didn’t mention it because I considered it cosmetic not an actual medical thing. The same thing kind of happened about a thyroid ultrasound I had once. Really, I have been healthy my whole life and any sort of tests I have had have come back normal, so I don’t recall all the circumstances. Then I tried to be honest and tell him the dr did recommend that I have a mammogram and he said he didn’t need to know about routine tests. Then he asked about drs visits in the last 5 years including urgent care and I said I had the flu once and he said not for acute symptoms.

Anyway, I feel like I was just interrogated and didn’t pass.

This is why I have been so happy with health insurance not being able exclude or upcharge you for medical history.

When we first became self-employed and needed private health insurance, the interview was like that.  Have you visited the doctor in the last 10 years and for what reasons.   WTH?  Who can remember all that? and right about that time it was in the news that an insurance company was denying some woman's cancer treatment because she didn't mention a yeast infection on her initial application.  So I was terrified I would forget something and then be denied cancer treatment one day.  The stress!

Yuck, that’s a bad feeling. I’ve had interviews like that, and they can make you feel like a criminal, even though you’re doing your best to be honest and forthright.

I hope you get the insurance!

Goldberry, about those health insurance interviews ... in the early 90s I needed private insurance and was actually turned down because I had (drumroll) missed a doc appt! Yup. They had the date and time, and I had not gone to the appointment. I was 18, and I should have called and cancelled, but I did pay the missed appointment fee. It was stupid, but just a young mistake. From then on, every time I applied for private insurance they’d ask if I had ever been turned down for health insurance and I had to explain why. It was humiliating.

That's insane.  I don't want to go back to that time, please no!

I don’t, either.

That stupid, careless, non-health related mistake followed me for years. I had a lot of anxiety about any change in insurance after that, it was bad. And that wasn’t even for a medical issue!
