Geometry Recs for a Kid Who Needs Lots of Spiraling

Recommended Posts

The topic pretty much says it all....

My rising 9th grade DS is a competent math student but math anxiety often derails his efforts. Spiral curriculum has been great for him the last two years—Saxon Pre-Algebra in 7th and CLE Algebra 1 this year. A tight spiral has kept him on track and reduced his fears of forgetting "what to do". Alas, there is no CLE Geometry that fits the bill and I've heard the Saxon Geometry textbook is not like other Saxon programs (weaker and disorganized).

He does not want an online class (Pre-Algebra was online with Veritas) so I will be teaching him. I 've read some older threads here and seen some names (Jacobs, Jurgensen's, Holt, Geometry a Guided Inquiry etc.) but just do not know enough about any of them to know if they are spiral or would be good for a kid who can do math but does not like math and who is prone to undermining his own progress with anxiety.

Thanks!

You might consider Teaching Textbooks. They do have some spiral review built in to each lesson if I remember correctly although not to the degree of CLE perhaps. Just make sure you keep tabs on the online problem sets to make sure the student is completing them successfully and not just clicking through.

Second Holt-- the topics are arranged fluidly-- so each chapter builds on previous chapters.  There are lots of review options as well.

If you will be teaching the course I recommend looking for the One Stop Planner (teacher not student edition).  This will have the digital TE, tests, quizzes, worksheets and other resources.  There are also online lessons for each section of the text and most of the odd problems have 'homework  help' online as well... (I do suggest the worksheets over the text problems for homework though-- but I do like the text's chapter reviews).

We're using and liking the mostly just the text for Holt, although I like having the Teacher One Stop. It took me a bit to find a routine with the assignments, but we do all of the "check it out" problems together, using the videos if necessary, then I assign a mix of similar problems and some others (review, challenge, etc). The solutions manual has solutions to everything in the book, which I like and probably need. We use the One Stop for extra practice or interesting practice. We should use the tests more, but we usually just pick some quizzes/ reviews from the book. I like Holt's solutions manual. Even if Dd has a different answer, I can usually make sense of it.
