Queserasera
If you were going to make up a class for Ancient Egypt, what resources would you include? It’s for a senior. He needs no credits, it would just be for fun. What books, lectures, videos would you include?

daijobu
The Great Courses lectures by Bob Brier. Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk I agree with klmama. Just don't get put off by the low production values. It looks like it dates to the VHS era, but the content is excellent!
Corraleno
Another vote for the Bob Brier course. It may not look flashy, but he's a really interesting and engaging lecturer. The video download of the course is currently on sale for $50, if you're interested.
klmama
We used the audio and it was fine; no visuals to distract! Check to see if your library has this course, the shorter one on the Great Pharoahs, or the new one on hieroglyphics.
Queserasera
Would you say the video download is better than just audio?
Garga
If you were going to make up a class for Ancient Egypt, what resources would you include? It’s for a senior. He needs no credits, it would just be for fun. What books, lectures, videos would you include? Here's what I'm doing for a semester long elective on ancient Egypt. We're in the middle of it now. DS is in 10th grade. For this particular class, I wanted to stay away from tests and essays, so all of his output is in projects and creative writing. ************************************** VIDEOS: Daily Life Videos (4 hours) John Romer Ancient Lives--Youtube Bob Brier lectures (24 hours, 48 lectures) (These are the Great Course lectures) READING: History of Myth, Pinch , 84 pages (8 hours) = We only read the first two sections. The last section is entries like an encyclopedia of the gods and places. Gods and Pharoahs, Harris(4 hours) Fiction, Nefertiti (15 hours?--no idea how long this will actually take for him to read. This will be the last thing he does in the class.) Ancient Papyrus Stories (2 hours) Ipuwer Papyrus: A poem about the ruin of Egyptian society--some think it is about the story in Exodus, a book in the Christian Bible, others completely disagree. The text: http://www.reshafim.org.il/ad/egypt/texts/ipuwer.htm Is it based on Exodus: http://www.ancientpages.com/2017/08/07/ipuwer-papyrus-report-ancient-catastrophe/ Story of Wenamun: An ancient adventure story about a priest who goes to collect gifts from a king. https://www.ancient.eu/article/1087/the-report-of-wenamun-text--commentary/ Tulli Papyrus: A diary that some believe is about aliens landing in Ancient Egypt, but only one person has seen the original copy, so historians think it might be fake. Pro aliens: https://www.ancient-code.com/ancient-egyptian-papyrus-reveals-extraterrestrials-visited-egypt-in-the-past/ Against aliens (it's fake): http://www.catchpenny.org/tulli.html Westcar Papyrus: A series of stories about the Pharaoh Khufu told by his sons. http://www.reshafim.org.il/ad/egypt/texts/westcar_papyrus.htm ACTIVITIES: Plan Trip (7.5 hours) Make Brochure (Google) (3 hours) Create Map (5 hours) Mummify hen (3.5 hours) Write a myth (5 hours) Power Point--compare Egyptian gods to Yahweh (5 hours) Above = 84 hours *************************** Here are descriptions of what the activities were: Plan Trip---he had to plan a trip as if he was going on vacation in Egypt. I came up with all sorts of guidelines. He had to figure out the exchange rate, had to figure out the weather (to decide when to go), had to visit a minimum of 7 historical site and write a paragraph explaining their significance, had to figure out how much money to take, figure out where to eat, how to travel, etc. He had to figure out what sites he could see on what days. For example, in the US, you can't see the Redwood Forest on the same day that you tour DC. So, he had to be logical about what to visit and when. Make Brochure---he had to then pretend that he was a person selling his trip to others and create a brochure that would make them want to go on his trip. He had to know how much to charge them and find ways to make the trip (and his brochure) seem attractive. Create map: using a 22x18 piece of watercolor paper, he had to make a to scale (as much as he could) map of Egypt and then paint it with water colors. He had to include the sites from his trip to Egypt on the map. Mummify hen: see online for how to mummify a chicken. We chose a cornish hen because it's smaller and easier to work with. I made him do this alone and figure it out from start to finish. Write a myth: After reading the books about myths, he needs to write one using the characters from myths, who will stay in character. He has to include or reference events from other myths that would have been common knowledge to ancient Egyptians. Power Point: Compare the Egyptian gods to Yahweh (Judeo-Christian God.)
