Chris in VA
Seems dd is getting sick a lot. We all had colds in January, then got a flu-like illness (fever, and she missed a week of school). Then she got sick again 2 days ago! Seems to just be a cold, no fever, but she did feel lousy with some hot flashes (could have been pre period related. She eats very healthfully, although she can't have dairy. Her last bloodwork showed some slight borderline deficiency in 2 common areas which we have rectified. She washes her hands and is good about hygiene. Argh. How to help her be hale and hearty? She should be the picture of health but just isn't. Any advice? ElizabethB
Vitamin D? My husband uses emergen C packets when he feels a cold coming on and swears by it. More fruits and veggies.
Peaceseeker
I don't know about general immunity but taking Elderberry syrup when something is coming on has prevented much winter illness around here this year. Twice it has totally prevented illness in both kids. Then during our third round this winter of a cold starting, one refused to take it insisting it was allergies and he was sick for a week with a virus. His sister started sniffling and got a slight sore throat and immediately took 3-4 doses a day for 2-3 days. Nothing developed for her. I swear that stuff is amazing! We used the Sambucus brand. Disclaimer- it worked for every one but me. I got the flu twice. Both strands. Edited March 17, 2018 by CaliforniaDreaming
Chris in VA
Thx. She does take emergen-c. I think it actually helped keep her relativelt healthy for her month of auditions! She eats a lot of veg but maybe only 2 fruits a day bc too much fruit sugar affects her. We do supplement vit d also. Good thoughts! Thx!

mlktwins
Yes, elderberry syrup. Has worked for all 4 of us this winter. I was coming down with a cold in December and I started taking the recommended dosage for when feeling symptoms. I never got any worse and was fine 2 days later. My boys ended up with Type A flu in December (with the vaccine). I started them on it pretty quickly and they didn't get super bad considering it was the flu. I had DH take the preventative dose during this time and he was spared. My boys are taking the Sambucol gummies this winter. They have been good since December. They swim year round a lot of kids were sick this winter. The real test for me will be whether I can keep them from getting the one bad sickness (cold or strep) during this summer's swim season when they have gotten something the past 5 years during summer swim. I'm a believer in this stuff. I do need to try making my own once prices for elderberries come down. ETA more info now that I'm not on my iPad :-) Edited March 17, 2018 by mlktwins
sgo95
We've been taking elderberry gummies this winter. The gummies also have vitamin C and zinc. We've only gotten 2 mild colds the whole winter, which is way lower than usual.

Peaceseeker
We have the syrup. I will have her take it more often. Thx. As soon as she feels she is coming down with anything do the preventative dosing of 4 times a day. I think it needs to be within the first 24-48 hours of coming down with something and you need to do it for 2-3 days. When it works it really works. I wish it worked for me like it does the rest of my family! Edited March 17, 2018 by CaliforniaDreaming
Peaceseeker
And hang in there- this flu and cold season has been particularly nasty! Hopefully all these bugs are dying down for the year.
klmama
Another vote for raw garlic. Someone here shared years ago about making "apple/garlic sandwiches" with sliced apples and pressed raw garlic. The apple cuts the bite of the garlic.
Rosie_0801
Probiotics. And garlic. Wild oregano essential oil works if you catch it early enough.
Chris in VA
Rosie, can you recommend an easy to take probiotic that is dairy-free? (Not just lactose-free) I would be interested in that, too!
My4arrows
We take probiotic pill that is df. You just need to search for one that you like best as there are several out there. We also do elderberry daily as well as raw garlic raw apple cider vinegar and raw honey.
elegantlion
I would not discount stress or general anxiousness, she's been busy with college apps and auditions, right?

Kombucha and water kefir are easy to make. Miso soup is easy to make. For pills, check your local pharmacy.
