struggling with Algebra 2 and math- 11th grade

So, math has always been a struggle due to a learning disability.  Future goals are military and/or law enforcement and/or criminal justice degree or maybe even psychology/counseling- first 2 years at community college only require 1 lower-level "Survey of Mathematics" class- nothing algebra heavy.  

 

Currently (nearing end of 11th grade), difficulties lie in preparing for ACT and gaining this darned Algebra 2 credit needed.  Ugh.  

 

Original plan was to spend part of year prepping for ACT, then tackle the "rest" of Algebra 2 topics through online program or whatever text I can get my hands on.  The year has slipped away from me and independent work (in math) was avoided, so we are cramming now with the prep program.  He's been getting anywhere from 17-20 in diagnostic stuff and still has plenty of time for prep.  I'm left with the dreaded algebra 2 credit now.  I'm thinking just plug through the summer doing Teaching Textbooks?  what do you think?  I've always shied away from TT because Ive heard they were almost a year behind.  He'd get the credit and maybe a better grade for GPA purposes, but is enough prep for the minimal amount of math he'd do in college anyway?

Agreeing with freesia--If TT Algebra 2 is anything like their geometry, it will be a solid non-honors level text, which sounds like what your son needs.  That said, if there is a learning disability involved, I wouldn't just hand off the program to him and expect it to be done--he's going to need a human in the room to make sure he understands.

OP the ACT examination may present an additional Math issue...   My DD is taking Algebra 2 and hasn't had Pre Calculus yet.    I seem to recall reading that there are several Trig questions on the ACT.    I mentioned to her that she may need to take a "crash course" in the applicable Trig, for those Trig questions on the ACT.

 

I don't think the SAT will present that issue and suggest that you evaluate whether or not to go with the ACT or take the SAT.

I probably would not suggest a crash course on trig unless the student is scoring 33,34 and just missing those. I would, however, review sine, cosine and tangent ratios in a right triangle and 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 ratios. The texts I use teach this in Algebra 1 and Geometry. If the student has not had those ratios then I would spend time to teach that. The trig problems that go beyond that can even sometimes be guessed at enough to rule out some choices and I think there is usually just one that goes beyond those ratios in right triangles.
