Any NC homeschoolers here? - Graduation requirements question

Recommended Posts

I have a soon-to-be 14 year old ds who will be staring HS in the fall.  I'm starting the planning process for what curriculum and materials we'll use and trying to also look at the big picture of all 4 years.  I'm a bit confused on the History/Social Studies part.  According to the ncdnpe site, it says there needs to be 4 credits for history/ss - 1 world, 2 us, and 1 civ & eco.  I haven't found any publishers offering 2 US history courses.  It says that these are the "minimum requirements for graduation from a North Carolina public high school"  Do I have to adhere to this since I'm not a public hs or can I I sub in a geography or other social science like psychology, anthropology, etc.?

FYI, Memoria Press has two years of US history that would be worth 2 credits.  As homeschoolers, we set our own graduation requirements,so I would look at college admission requirements to determine courses. Here are minimum requirements for UNC admission: https://www.northcarolina.edu/prospective-students/minimum-admission-requirements

I would also be thinking about if you're going to try to take advantage of dual enrollment in a community college for 11th and 12th. A course like psychology might be better taken in that environment where it can also count towards college credit.

Just my two cents!

Thank you petepie2!  Yes, I have also looked at the entrance requirements for the UNC schools but I wasn't sure if I was bound by the NC high school requirements.

I've thought of dual enrollment but haven't explored it too deeply yet - it's definitely something to consider! :)

You do not have to follow the requirements for the public schools. I'd follow the requirements for the UNC schools if you plan on applying to them. If you're going to go the CC/transfer route then do what you want. If you do still want/need 2 US history courses, you can get them through dual enrollment, and they're offered on campus and online at the NC community colleges. A good Facebook group to join to learn more about dual enrollment in NC is North Carolina Homeschooling for College Credit.

You can do whatever you like. I would pay close attention to any entrance requirements for colleges he might be interested in. I came across some that specifically wanted at least one class specifically in US history, or one in government/civics. For instance, we chose a class in US history since 1865 rather than a full survey of American history class, since my daughter preferred it. She did two world civ classes because she liked the professor so much, and did DE American government even though she had a civics class already because she wanted to go deeper.

One big picture thing to consider is eligibility for dual enrollment. If you want to use dual enrollment in junior and senior year for college transfer, you'll want to be sure he's through algebra II and two English classes by the end of sophomore year, as that's an entrance requirement for even provisional status on the college pathways (career pathways are different). We did it by doing alg I/alg II/geometry rather than putting geometry in the middle as it was when I was in school.

Definitely join us at the North Carolina Homeschooling for College Credit FB page. Last week I added a big file cross-referencing the community colleges in NC which offer Career and College Promise classes to 9th/10th graders (certain career paths only) along with which of the courses in career pathways overlap with the college transfer pathways, as well as how the various college transfer pathways themselves overlap. It's in the files section and could be useful for your planning. You will have to request to join. https://www.facebook.com/groups/NCHS4CC/ My daughter has loved being in dual enrollment and it's the kind of info I wish I had had access to when I was planning her high school coursework.

KarenNC - I see now that I am not bound to the public school requirements - whew! :)  I appreciate the clarity on that!  I wasn't aware of the requirement of Alg. II for dual enrollment.  That will definitely influence his math schedule.  Like you, I did geometry in between the algebras.

I'm off to check out the FB page - that sounds like an awesome resource!  Thank you!

I'm glad you posted this.  I just requested to join.

I've been spending quite a bit of time trying to figure out the Career and College Promise program, and some of it is confusing.  I've got one upcoming senior who hopes to take a couple of classes next fall and one upcoming sophomore who may choose the engineering transfer program, depending on finances.  I will be so grateful for any information that helps me figure this out!
