popmom
I'm a tad overwhelmed between OT and speech "homework". I would just like to compare notes with someone who has gone through this with a child. DD is 12--Aspie, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and oral myofunctional issues. Her speech therapist said if we could just get in 3 days a week of exercises (plus the 45 minute session at therapy), that would be enough. She is making some progress, but man, it's slow. ETA: Also wondering if I really need to put off orthodontic treatment. The speech therapist said most orthos want to wait until they've corrected the tongue issues that are moving the teeth, but that could be a long time. I should at least set up a consultation with an ortho and see what they say. Edited March 11, 2018 by stephensgirls
PeterPan
Well advice is always better when it's the person's field. I've been told so much wrong stuff by people speaking out of their profession, it isn't funny. If you've been to 3-4 orthos to get intake evals and estimates and they're all saying sorta the same thing, that's your sign. And if she needs an expander, than sooner rather than later is better. And if they're going to put in a permanent retainer (some do), it won't matter. Getting her bite fixed (molars lining up properly) protects her teeth. Overbite is fluid and cosmetic. If it comes back, you don't care. I doubt the *molars* will return to ill positions due to her tongue, so I'd be more concerned about correcting those. popmom
I agree with you. I'm going to get her an appointment. I will get more than one opinion. Her regular dentist had no problem with us waiting, but he's not an ortho either. Edited March 12, 2018 by stephensgirls
Lecka
I had tongue thrusting issues when I had braces. I had kind-of a combination of rubber bands that blocked my tongue, and also I had a place where I could thrust my tongue, I just had to do it in that place, which I was able to do with some practice. I definitely had easy control of my tongue, though, if that makes sense. I could change the direction and place. I think it’s worth asking, but I think maybe ask your slp for some more details about what it is she is doing. With me they assumed it was in my ability to change some things, and it was in my ability, but if it’s not in your daughter’s ability then that is not good for them to think.
