happi duck
We forgot to rinse the lentils and barley before making the soup. Would you eat it?

cjzimmer1
Well since I've never rinsed either of those when I normally cook them, I can't imagine why one wouldn't eat something for that reason.

Some times there can be very small pebbles that don’t get culled by the sorting machines. But not a lot and not always.
justasque
Goodness yes. Sometimes there are little stones in lentils, so watch for those, but not rinsing wouldn't give me any pause.

Well I do sort through them but since only washing was mentioned that was the only pat I commented on.

BarbecueMom
I almost replied immediately, "Yep!" But then I started thinking, "Wait, am I missing something? Is there some kind of lentil toxin that I'm unaware of? Have I been poisoning my family with my vegetarian shepherd's pie?" Phew, crisis averted. Enjoy the soup!

Catwoman
I know you already have your answer, but because I’m always one of the paranoid people who says, “NO! Throw it out,†I wanted the chance to finally get to say that YES, I would eat it. :)
Laurie4b
My farm-raised father would tell us growing up: "You gotta eat a peck of dirt before you die." (A peck is 1/4 of a bushel. It's a lot of dirt! ;) ) I always rinse for the pebble issue but in 40 some years of rinsing have never found one. So I think you're safe. You're probably safe even if someone swallows a pebble, too.

J-rap
I used to rinse and look carefully for stones in my legumes. Year ago, I'd always find several in every bag. (Even then, they were so tiny that it wouldn't have hurt to eat them.) I never seem to find stones anymore though, so generally just give them a quick rinse (and not check for stones). But if I forget to rinse? No big deal.
