I appreciate this community for sharing your stories, experiences, various educational philosophies, etc. Your numerous postings has guided me to successfully home school my child through almost four years of high school, and for that, I thank you all. However, it seems that I need guidance one more time from this community before my child finishes high school in a few months. For reasons beyond our control, we were unable to register my child (at our local community college) to the second part (i.e., semester) of algebra-based physics with lab. This is a course that truly interest my child and would like to take during the last semester of 12th grade. As a result, can anyone suggest an online algebra-based physics with lab course (they are usually four semester credits) that can be started now and end before June 1st? Its okay if the course is on-demand, express block scheduling, or any other self-paced methods. In other words, we are open to any suggestions. In addition, I am looking to spend anywhere below $1,000 on tuition. Again, your help and suggestions would be truly appreciated. 8filltheheart Posted February 22, 2018 Share Posted February 22, 2018 I don't think you'll be able to find a for credit course at this point. Semesters are probably beyond the add/drop. So basically a self-paced online Physics class with a lab - that would be very hard to find. My suggestion - contact your CC to see if they would allow you cover the course material self-paced and take mid-term(s) and finals through them in June (pay tuition etc) and get credit. Maybe you could squeeze the labs in now. Worth a phone call. Did your student attend a live class for the CC last semester or was it online? I am going to look at the details to make sure that there is a lab component to it (the lab component is important for us). Plus, it is within my price range. Maybe a hybrid class with online lectures and just driving in for labs? Ds drove about an hour to another CC when he really, really wanted a specific class. Perhaps your StateU? Ds was dual enrolled at the local CC and found out from other dual enrollment students that the StateU had dual enrollment but the preference was to give the classes to the neighboring high school. Ds was able to get a dual enrollment class at StateU even though he wasn't from the preferred high school. Finally, will the class be offered at the CC this summer? Tsuga Posted February 22, 2018 Share Posted February 22, 2018 (edited) How flexible are you with cost? What state? Our colleges have some online courses that haven't had extensive hwk due yet. But it would likely require more than $1k if you aren't in state. Edit: Lab is going to be hard to find online. But also, can you do it Spring Quarter? In WA, on the west side of the state, we have three quarters per year plus summer. So, you could take physics in spring and you have plenty of time to register, etc. Again, if you're OOS it might really get close to $1k because the prices are tailored to the ultra-rich international students, but it's possible. That number probably doubles within 1 hour of driving. Over the past 4 years, my child has taken courses in five of these community colleges. As a result, I am very familiar with the academic calendars of all these institutions in my area (including public and private universities) and thus, do see some courses that start the second half of spring. Unfortunately, no physics courses are offered during this short term. In addition, I really like your suggestion to change the high school graduation date from May 31st to July 1st. However, there are two issues with this suggestion: 1) Everything uploaded in the Common App states that she is going to finish high school on May 31st. I do not know how this change is viewed by potential universities. 2) There are a few institutions that offer the algebra-based physics with lab between middle of May to end of June; nevertheless, the first part of this course is usually offered during this early summer term and the second part of this course (the one we need) is usually offered during the middle to end part of the summer term (i.e., after July 1st). DonHomeschool Posted February 22, 2018 Author Share Posted February 22, 2018 Tsuga, Apparently, I am not flexible enough with the cost and here is why: I found the course needed, and during the preferred time-period with Thomas Edison State University (TESU). https://www2.tesu.edu/course.php?CourseCode=PHY-116&sem= The problem is that the tuition is going to cost $2,100, on top of the lab kits and other materials needed. Sadly, this may be a bit out of my budget. Therefore, if there is an opportunity to take this course for $1,000, $1,200, etc., I would gladly pay for it. Besides TESU, the main issue here is finding an algebra-based physics II with lab course that starts now and finishes by the end of May. regentrude Posted February 22, 2018 Share Posted February 22, 2018 (edited) I think the only chance would be a college that is on a quarter system and has a one quarter Physics II course. Colleges that are semester based are now well into the semester and either in week 6 (if they start after MLK) or in week 8 (if they start at the beginning of January). But if you can find a college on the quarter system, their spring quarter would not start until mid-March. Does it have to be a college class? can she not self study and do CLEP? Did you submit your mid-yr report already? If not, it is simple to include that due to a conflict, the course isn't being taken. If it has been submitted, simply notify the schools that it isn't being taken. Both of those are options if you cannot find a satisfactory solution. Call one of the admissions offices and ask if that is how it is handled. But, you can always contact admissions directly as the guidance counselor. Ask them how to report a course modification. It is not anything that unusual. It happens. Fwiw, I cannot imagine that an algebra-based physics course is going to change anything.
