Sarah0000
My accelerated six year old likes these and it's the only writing he'll do without complaint. He'll be finishing up the four books this school year. I'm looking for the next thing for first grade. Is there anything else in a similar format that he could follow up with? I think what he likes are the stories and thinking activities. I like the open and go workbook. I've tried books like All About Marvelous Me where it's basically fill in the blanks writing. You'd think I asked him to cut off his left foot. He'll tolerate copywork like in Spelling You See but doesn't enjoy it. He's ok with Bravewriter composition like fairytale retellings but only if I scribe. I think he needs explicit direction like "Write a sentence about..." or "Make a list of..." but that allows for interesting and open ended content. Any suggestions? desertflower
Well, not exactly like what you mentioned above, but CAP has Fables in their W&R series. https://classicalacademicpress.com/product/writing-rhetoric-book-1-fable-program/ There are sample pages on the site. This was fun for my oldest. but he was 7 when he did it. It's for grades 3/4. It has sentence play, vocab, copywork, narration, talk about it and go deeper sections. From what I saw on the samples for the RFP Aesop book, I think sentence play, vocab, talk about it, and the go deeper sections will be like it. You may have to find your own coloring page though. RFP looks much cuter. I'm thinking of getting it. :) I don't know what the next step for him would be. I did FLL/WWE when mine was 6. BW is a good suggestion. I just got Beowulf grammer. http://guesthollow.com/homeschool/english/beowulfs_grammar.html It looks really cute. I hope you find something. Sarah0000
CAP W&R is what I want to go with when he's ready, but I thought it might be too much of a jump. How well was your seven year old writing before he started it?
desertflower
We did it orally. We skipped the parts that we were doing in WWE. We didn't have a lot of time for handwriting. Yes, I agree that W&R Fable doesn't seem to be as much fun as RFP Aesop books.
alisoncooks
Have you looked at the first two Just Write books? (About Me, About My World) My writing-phobic kiddos did these (and at an older age than recommended). But they have the same fun feel, with lots of drawing included. Sarah0000
It doesn't look like the Just Write series has any stories or thinking activities. I tried similar stuff and he's not interested. I'm looking at MP Simply Classical Writing which has a companion set of picture books but I can't figure out how the writing activities correspond with the picture books. Sarah0000
I think next year I'll try out W&R slowly. I plan to hit narration and dictation hard this semester so maybe W&R will be on level for him.
