Parks challenge Feb 18-24

The rules are simple as well----you make up your own challenge. You can count school playgrounds, local parks, township, county, state, linear, or national parks. You can set a goal of going to a park once a week, visiting 10 new parks this year, trying a new activity at a favorite park or whatever fits the needs of your family and your locale. You can count playgrounds, walking, hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, skating, skiing, boating, kayaking, etc......whatever activities you want.

**********

This week was another no new park week for us. We got dumped on twice with 2 snow storms so that schools were closed. Just makes visiting parks too hard. I did go cross country skiing but had already counted that park.

This morning we had fresh snow on the ground but the sun was out and you could small spring in the air. There is hope. Tuesday we are supposed to be up to 60 with up to 3 inches of rain. With frozen ground it is a recipe for flooding.

Hopefully though by later in the week I can get out and conquer another park.

For those new to the thread, my goal this year is 50 different parks. So far for the year I have 3 different parks in 3 different cities.

Finally, the weather cooperated for hike #9 to the top of the highest mountain in our state, with the tallest waterfall. And because it had rained so much, there was actually water.

I don't know how you attach pictures - the max size is 5.7k.

I can't help with the pictures. Glad you got to see the waterfalls. Last fall I made my kids hike several miles with a 995ft gain in elevation (we are from Michigan so that is a lot for us) in Arkansas in record heat (90s and humid) only to get to the best waterfall in the state....with no water flowing due to lack of rain and the heat. They were not impressed.

which one? Hemmed in Hollow? that's usually only a trickle, or nothing. Gotta go right after rains.

Lost Valley/Eden Falls near Ponca   I enjoyed it but the kids were not impressed with the lack of waterfalls.

We did drive down the road a bit and went to the Buffalo National River and let them play there for a while.  The water level was lower and we saw deer crossing the river right behind us.

but did you go into the cave? That's pretty cool, especially in summer.

We did the first overhang cave.  We didn't have flashlights, etc. to do the small/narrow cave at the end of the trail.  Everyone was hot and crabby by then as well as it was 96 and humid even though it was still early morning.  We were not expecting that hot in mid/late September.  Locals all commented on how the week before it never got above 70 degrees.  That was the weather we were hoping for.

I took a walk at a local nature center park last Tuesday.  I thought I'd only walk for about 20 minutes but I got lost, wandered around trying to find my way out, came out on the opposite side of the park and then couldn't find my car!  Wound up spend about 50 minutes running up and down hills and was late picking my dd up from her homeschool co-op.  It was cold and raw and some places were muddy and some a bit icy but I saw a pileated woodpecker!  So it was worth it.  Sorry I did not get a good shot of the bird.  It was way up high in a tree.

I think I might walk on the bike path this week.

Sorry you got lost but it sounds like a great park. I love finding nature.
