I was thinking the same thing.

 

This is a total aside, but it reminds me of something.  In one of my college classes I read a dystopian novel in which children were taken away from their mothers in a sudden government takeover or something like that.  I was in my 30s, an adult student returning, and 90% of my classmates were 20-22 year old women.

 

During class discussions, so many of the young women said, angrily, "I'd never let that happen to  my child!"  "I'd never let them take my child!" etc.  The professor looked at me, sitting there quietly, and asked what I thought.  Well, I thought how naive these  young women were, and didn't they know any history (holocaust, for one example)?  I didn't say that, but probably something more diplomatic.  But it struck me, obviously since I remember it still, how skewed these women's idea of their own ability to protect themselves and their children was.  And I wondered how they came to think that way.  (FWIS, this was in the late 1980s.)

I think this goes back to having a really really good relationship with your kids, so they'll talk to you.

I know I didn't trust my mom - I didn't give a rip what she said.   I do know there are times I could easily have gotten myself into a lot of trouble because of being young and naive.  (not that she was a font of wisdom - but I still didn't care what she said.)

Yeah, I saw this part too and I fully believe they still don't get it. I am sure they think people are over reacting. Teens have a special talent for assuming the best in everyone and not believing someone who is nice to them could have nefarious motives.

Even though they understand that there could be physical threats out there, I don't think most girls or women really understand how strong men are.  Most guys are decent human beings who don't ever use their full strength in any way when touching girls or women, so many young women don't perceive just how easily they could be physically forced into situations against their will.

My husband and I were talking about this.  We agreed that neither of our kids, at those ages, would have been likely to do as those girls did. He said I did a good job of making them suspicious of people.  LOL.

I was twenty before I caught a glimpse of this. I'd wrestled with my brother when we were kids and similar in strength, but had never tested my strength against that of a male past puberty.

 

One day in college I got in a playful tussle with a male friend.

 

I was in good shape and actively worked out.

 

He was about my height.

 

I was no where close to strong enough to get away from him if he didn't want me to.

 

It was eye opening for sure

I think they also suffer from that common teen attitude - invincibility.  even if they don't think everyone is basically good - they think  it won't affect them.

Lord, what a close call. What is really upsetting though is the part where the article writer suspects that "Drey" will not be prosecuted because he likely had a fake Instagram account with a fake picture. 

I would think with all the forensic computer tech they could run this guy to ground.

I can't get through to my oldest in this respect because "I've wrestled with guys before." And she won't believe that those guys are holding back because she's a girl.

I know that some, maybe all?, American Airlines receive company communications re: sex trafficking. It's good to see that this awareness is paying off, and that this agent trusted her gut. What a happy ending! If those were my daughters, I'd have to chain them up next to me for the rest of their adolescence, ... how scary.
