Switching things up with math

I would really appreciate some advice with math. My oldest is 9 and we are about 3/4 the way through AOPS Pre-A. He is doing fine with it but math is becoming much more of a slog instead of his joy. Maybe it is that Spring is here or we have moved and he is having a hard time adjusting. Anyway, this has never happened before so I thought I would try and change to something different and we could come back to finish the rest of AOPS later. So does anyone have any suggestions for something that would be a refreshing change but not so easy it would bore him to death? I would appreciate the help so much!

Hands On Equations

One of the Zaccaro books

Mathematics: A Human Endeavor

Secrets of Mental Math by Art Benjamin (bonus for it possibly adding speed or accuracy to his calculations in pre-A)

The Number Devil or Murderous Math books

Dragonbox 12+ and Dragonbox Elements

Do you recommend the DVD or book?  My library has both options.

Wow, thanks so much everyone.  My kids got sick and I sort of lost track of this thread. You have given me lots of great options and I am so grateful! I think a break with something else will just refresh and inspire him more.

A few of these we have already done- some Zacarro book and the a MOEMS book. But both of these have more than I thought. I actually have Hands on Equations so we will start with that but I will be taking a closer look at all these and purchasing some. Patty Paper Geometry was on my wish list and I would love to know what other books of his you all like.

Thank you!

If you don't have the verbal problems book, I would definitely get that. If you just do the video lessons, it's just scratching the surface.

Pirate Math and Smart Moves are the others that I have. They are all pretty different from one another. It just depends on what you want to explore.

We also use the second one. I have both, since I wasn’t sure what to get, and the first one is pretty simple. The second one contains a variety of levels in its problems and will last you through the program.

First one is just level 1 problems. Second has a lot more depth and organized by type of word problem and level 1, 2 & 3 problems. Distance, coin, age, fractional relations,

etc. As much as I like HOE and the introducation of algebra pictorially, there's no application with just that because ulitimately the need the ability to understand a word problem, what are they asking, identify what is the variable and express it algebraically and then solve for the variable.
