mlktwins
If you had to choose between Vocabulary from Classical Roots and Wordly Wise, which would you pick and why? My 7th graders are speak well (using bigger words than others we are around in their age group), one is a natural speller (the other does pretty well), and they both read a lot (read alouds, before bed fun reading, and assigned reading for history, science, and literature). They have done Wordly Wise 3 through 7 and Vocab Roots 4 though 6. I do have Vocab roots through Level C that I picked up used and cheap (they were unused books). Is a separate vocabulary program even needed in these circumstances? I am happy to do them - both of them even -- if it is worth the time. I'm trying to streamline the rest of 7th grade and plan for 8th. Any thoughts appreciated.
Momto6inIN
We switch from WW to VCR starting in middle school because it's more roots based and more challenging. My kids get a lot of their advanced vocab from their reading, but they tend to just pick up words from context, and don't necessarily analyze the words at all, so I find a separate vocab program helpful. I wouldn't do both. Hope that helps! Sent from my Z988 using Tapatalk
kelly4me
My DS 12 has been using Membean for the past year and a half for his outside vocabulary program. It is online and we love their multi-sensory approach to vocabulary. He uses it about 15 minutes/day 3x per week. It is self-paced based on their success with the program. They start based on the level that they test into. He's been introduced to almost 1,000 words in the past 18 or so months. They have robust reporting as well. I got it as part of a group buy. It's been money well spent. Kelly
Trilliumlady
FWIW I think I will be switching DD to VCR from WW this coming year, mainly because I think it will dovetail nicely with whatever we continue on in for Latin. At least I think we’ll switch.......
Fawnmoscato
We are doing Classical Roots because Dd is interested in Latin and Greek. I don't know that it's a better program, or has an advantage over any other program, but they work gets done because it's interesting to her.
Fawnmoscato
Would you mind linking to that program? I am looking for one for my kids. http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=Spelling%2FVocabulary/8&category=Vocabulary+from+Classical+Roots/1962 Here is the Cathy Duffy review: https://cathyduffyreviews.com/homeschool-reviews-core-curricula/spelling-and-vocabulary/vocabulary-resources/vocabulary-from-classical-roots
