I bled this month for two weeks straight although it was light to medium the whole time. I would often stop for 36 hrs or more and I would think it was over and then it would start again. That was really annoying but I was not able to get my thyroid medication starting at the beginning of that and I was weaning off bio identical progesterone due to the expense (no insurance). I figured that was why and just put up with it. I stopped bleeding for a full week and then started again. This time it was gushing, massive amounts of bleeding. Tampon and overnight pad both per hour. That lasted two full days and the morning of the third day I remembered the ibuprofen trick to stop menstral bleeding and tried that. It worked very quickly actually and by that evening (last night) had stopped completely. I have no idea what happens to unshed lining when you do that or if I will just start bleeding again. I was finally able to get thyroid meds yesterday and I went back on my full dose of progesterone, but will run out in ten days so hoping I can figure out how to get more.

Here's the biggest concern: Sunday when I started bleeding again I began having chest pains. Crushing, can't breathe deeply, feels like a ton of bricks on my chest kinda thing. I thought it was likely anemia and began taking iron immediately. I get dizzy and am very exhausted. Today was better but I still needed to be laying flat about half the day. My chest hurts still and I feel like I can't get a full deep breath even though I need it. Or rather I take a deep breath as I feel lightheaded (even when laying down) but it doesn't help. Am I missing something? Does this sound like anemia caused by crazy amounts of bleeding? Anything else I should be considering? Yes I should go to the doctor probably but I don't know how to make that happen with our current financial issues. Thanks

ETA: part of the chest pain is a pounding heart racing feeling. It's hard to relax to sleep as my heart just pounds and pounds and races.

Any chance you could have been miscarrying?

I think you need a doctor. Do you have no insurance?

Yes it's possible. We don't prevent. Our youngest is 3.5 and we haven't conceived since she was born and I think I'm done. I haven't seen a single sign of ovulation since she was born either. I am 41. Hmmm. There was an unusual for me amount of cramping during the two weeks of bleeding. I didn't even think of that as it was right on time.

If I'm not better tomorrow I guess I will call my ob/gyn. We just still have medical bills from last summer we are paying on and no available cash to cash pay at the moment. No insurance but a health share. We haven't met our yearly amount ($1500 per family) so would need to pay for a visit.

if you are not willing to go to the Er, call your md ASAP in the morning. You chest pain sounds like a pulmonary embolism which absolutely can be life threatening.

I do not have any kind of cough so there is that. I actually said to my friend yesterday that I felt like I had just had a baby. The fatigue and such felt like that. I am leaning towards thinking it was/is a miscarriage. That makes the most sense. I thought it was a horrible cycle due to perimenopause but it does fit the pattern of a miscarriage. I have no idea why I didn't think of that. I've never had one. Just 10 full term pregnancies so I guess that's why it didnt occur to me. Plus I was pretty sure we weren't going to conceive again.

My mom had ten babies, with the last born shortly before her 45th birthday.

She got pregnant unexpectedly at age 50 and miscarried.

If it was a miscarriage you will want to have an OB check to make sure it was complete.

And yes, the heart issue is worrisome. Your health is worth more than $1500. Sometimes we moms need a reminder that our families need us well and whole and nothing is worth putting that at risk.

You need to see a doctor. I'd guess baseline you'd need to run blood work, have your heart listened to, and possibly have a pelvic ultrasound. You may have had a miscarriage but there are other uterine problems which present like this as well.   Even if you DO feel better, I strongly believe you need to see a doctor, tell them all your symptoms and go from there.

According to this link only 37% of patients with a pulmonary embolism had a cough.

I wouldn't take reassurance from not having one.

I dealt with anemia the majority of my life, sometimes rather severe. Being short of breath/feeling like you can't get a good breath, feeling dizzy and/or exhausted are all common symptoms. Chest pain isn't. I agree that your symptoms warrant a doctor visit.  :grouphug:

I agree, and also that you have lost too much blood. Going through one pad an hour is a hemorrhage. Your breathing symptoms are likely due to your body needing sufficient blood to move oxygen around properly. GYN bleeds are no joke.

Please go to the ER now. Your OB will likely send you there anyway, so save your copay. [emoji173]

You definitely need to be seen, not just a phone consult.  Call your OB and tell them you are going to ER and WHY.  They may want to either meet you there or call the ER and ask to be kept informed.  And be driven - you are possibly too light-headed from blood loss to drive safely now.

I'm still here. I rested all day yesterday. No more bleeding. Chest pain/heaviness off and on and lots of fatigue and lightheadedness. I have a call into the nurse at my Drs to see if they can get me in today. I really think it's related to too much blood loss as it feels pretty much exactly what I feel like after birth. Not sure if they can do much other than prescribe more iron but I want the peace of mind before the weekend.

Thank you all for your concern!

If your counts are low enough you may need a transfusion. I hope they get back to you soon.

Ob/gyn can't get me in until Monday. I'm debating but leaning towards urgent care at this point. Just so tired of feeling so crummy.

I think that is a good idea.....From what you’ve written, I think you need to be seen by a dr before Monday. Hope you’re feeling better soon!

I am thinking ER. Urgent care doesn’t have some things available that ER does.

Pulmonary embolisms sound possible to me as well. Urgent care doesn’t have enough equipment to deal with this.

Praying for you.

I agree with this.....but even urgent care would be better than not going anywhere. I understand about not going because of expense (I’m still paying on two ER visits), but the symptoms sound serious enough that some medical examination is necessary. If op will only go to urgent care, that is better than not going. They will send her on to ER if needed.

Thanks for the update busymama.

I hope you do go in today; I'm worried about you.

I know it stinks when you end up spending money you don't really have to spend and the issue turned out to be not urgent/serious, but it really is worth it when there is a reasonable chance of the problem being serious. Say you have a 90% chance of being fine if you wait until Monday; the 10% chance of something going badly wrong is worth acting pre-emptively on.

I agree that Urgent Care is better than nothing. I also get the medical bill situation. We have a high deductible plan and we had so many bills last year - we met our out of pocket max somewhere around June, but I didn't actually pay it all until last month.

Are you premenopausal? Both my sister and a good friend of mine had similar symptoms when they were, really heavy bleeding for extended periods, stopping, starting up again, etc.

That's what I assume. I've been on bioidentical progesterone to treat symptoms for a couple years but I'm not sure if my Dr ever actually said I was peri or not. I'm 41.

Sitting here waiting to be seen at urgent care. $150 vs $5000 for the ER is just what it is. We did end up at the er last year for stitches and the original bill was $5000. Our health share did negotiate it down but it's just such a scary thing to walk in there and have no idea how many thousands of dollars it's going to cost. I just can't do that without knowing it's more serious than here take some iron

Urgent care is a good place to start!  They'll certainly let you know if you need to be seen at an ER.

Yeah they are making me go to the ER. Super nice doctor/PA. Did EKG and while it's not a heart attack there is something that he doesn't like. He said it could be caused by anemia but he can't test or treat for that anyways so here I go. Darn it. Sigh.

I had a feeling that was going to happen, but at least now you KNOW you need

Been thinking about you all day. So glad you went in, your symptoms sound potentially serious. I understand the billing issues - we are still financially suffering from a surgery I needed several years ago - and we have very good insurance.

Please keep us posted. Thinking of you.

ER was great and fast. But nothing is wrong 😕 I mean something has to be wrong but nothing they can find. Hemoglobin is 13.1! Heart lungs chest x Ray, ultrasound showed an ovarian cyst but that's it. I am still dizzy and lightheaded and have chest pain/pressure and feel crummy but no reason that they can find. I'm headed home.

Dud they discuss PE’s? Sorry to keep saying but, but mine were missed twice and I could have died.

If your symptoms keep on, ask someone to order a DDimer blood test.

Glad you went in and praying you feel better in the morning.

I asked but she said it wasn't that. Not sure how they know. The chest X-ray?
