ScoutTN Posted January 31, 2018 Share Posted January 31, 2018 (edited) Well, this is my boy-who-would rather-build-forts. He is challenging to teach. Rethinking school for him to make it less bookish, with more time for physical activity, practical skills and people. This extroverted kid (who already has lots of activities and people) wants more time with people who are not me! ? It's ok. Just trying to figure out what will work in our particular circumstances. So far, everything is good. Science and geography are the highlights thus far. Pleased to see progress in math. Here's what I am thinking so far: Math: finish MM4, lots of games and facts review. Writing: Wordsmith Apprentice. Maybe some Killgallon. Literature: lots of good books. Grammar: FLL4 Spelling: Finish AAS 4 and start 5. Science: Mostly hands-on. Volunteering at the zoo! Science class at the local children's science center. This is a HUGE hit so far! (Costs less than a good Chemistry set!) Nature Center programs. Plus a few books: Quark Zoology, Tiner's Chemistry, and whatever he gets from the library. History: Late Modern, mom-made Geography: Beautiful Feet This is excellent! Very fun to do together. Typing! He loves this. :) Dance Mat for now. Typing.com after that. Art and Drama tutorial one half-day a week. Cub Scouts, choir, piano, and flag football. I always enjoy reading these threads because I get good ideas and because the variety is fun to see. A visible reminder that one size does not fit all. Seeking Squirrels Posted January 31, 2018 Share Posted January 31, 2018 Math: SM, probably 4b/5a. We had to back up and dip into 3b this year (thank you ps 3rd), so she's on 4a right now. We'll just keep going with wherever we are. We also do a bit of BA on the side. She's in 3b now, so maybe 3c/3d next year. Writing/grammar: EIW5 Spelling: AAS probably the last half of 4 and then 5. She's almost finished with 3 now. Literature: Probably just a list made by me from searching other lists ;) Science: RSO Bio2 w/ microscope labs. History: HO middle ages Tech: I'm thinking coding and robotics, but I'm not certain yet and I have no idea what I'll use for it. I'm open to suggestions! (She has to have a separate tech class for our charter. It has to fall under technology, engineering, or entrepreneurship. This year she did engineering with legos, k'nex, and engino, so it doesn't have to be too deep. I'll have $150 to play with :) Extracurricular: I don't know yet, but she's loving theater this year, so maybe we'll do that again. I'd also like to get her back into tumbling. She dropped it when she started theater (she does not like a full schedule), but her OT says she needs it. Other: We are in an amazing co-op but I won't know what classes she'll be in until August. For some reason, after all these years, I still want the support of a curriculum for everything! Dd could care less but I am such a baby! :laugh: Reading: A Wrinkle in Time, Number the Stars, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM, and more but I don't know what yet. Sequential Spelling ????? haven't figured out grammar yet English from the Roots Up... I think...maybe...maybe not IEW Theme Based Writing Ancients ???? unknown handwriting. She is using a therapy program from her OT this year so we'll see what she recommends for next year ??? unsure on typing. Above The Rowan Posted January 31, 2018 Share Posted January 31, 2018 I'm just starting the figuring out, but so far this is what we're thinking for my 5th grader for next year: Math: we've been using Book One from the Strayer Upton series, and actually she likes it quite a lot. I think, barring any major changes, we'll stick with that and move into Book Two for her fifth grade year. Science: life science and/or botany - not sure which we'll use yet. I don't care for the layout of RSO's level one sciences, but we need a secular curriculum so the search is still on for that. LA: W&R book two, Well-ordered language, some Brave Writer lifestyle things thrown in there too. We'd like to find a spelling program, but haven't decided on one just yet. Language: Lively Latin Book 1 and she's also begging to do Greek so...we'll feel out how Latin is going and we may add Greek for Children. Or we may do Greek for 5th grade and do Latin starting in 6th. History: Ancient Rome (not sure which spine yet, but probably just a few good books and she'll start a history notebook). Other stuff: Continue with Philosophy For Children, probably start on some logic. EEME also has a robotics kit that looks like it would make for a great class. Thank you for the suggestions! The Mbot looks really cool. Social studies: A year of geography using Visualize World Geography, providing I can get it on DVD (currently "out of stock") bought used. (If he misses history, there's the library. We'll get back to ancients for 6th via Oak Meadow. I'm leaving the wall timeline up.) Spelling: Heaven help us. He's working very, very hard in Spelling You See Wild Tales (which I think is meant for 2nd) and... I think it's helping some? But not to the extent that he can spell all the words right on Friday; this is bugging me. I loved the organization of Wheeler's, but it did nothing for him. I made myself a note to look at Steck-Vaughn or Sequential Spelling, but may just go with SYS Americana. UPDATE: Bought Steck-Vaughn 5. (SYS has been sucking up a lot of DS's writing stamina for the day). Vocabulary: His strong suit; he's finding Vocabulary Virtuoso easy. I plan to buy him Vocabulary from Classical Roots A. UPDATE: I bought it and he doesn't love the look of it, but he needs the classical root work IMO. There will probably be time to do most of level B as well. Grammar: Likely DGP 5. DGP gets done! This and a capitalization book will be independent work. Writing: Finishing Don't Forget to Write and maybe the Killgallons' paragraph book. Continued cursive and typing practice. Might do a Bravewriter course at some point. Math: He loves the Beast Academy guides, but I'm considering going back to Singapore as our main text. I think I need to bring him to the store to look. UPDATE: Bought SM 5 and a CTC analogies book. I'll also get him the BA guides just for fun. Science: I'm going to try out The Sciences: An Integrated Approach as a spine. And some Handbook of Nature Study. Foreign language: I've told him I'm not going to buy Japanese stuff unless he can confirm that he'll work harder than he is in Spanish... we'll see. Homeschool Spanish Academy. Other: More piano lessons unless he asks for a different instrument. UPDATE: He says he wants to switch to electric guitar; I'll look into it. Continuing scouts, soccer and/or other sports as he's interested, Sunday school, weekly library visits. I will probably make him do a month of swim lessons. Or maybe it's March and I'm just ready for summer so I'm having a hard time caring. We've been working so hard to remediate my daughter's dyslexia that we've lost sight of some of the fun stuff. Math: continue BA Reading/Spelling: Continue Barton Reading and Spelling Writing: continue CAP Writing and Rhetoric Grammar: Fix-It 2 (I'm not sure why this works, but it's working really well so on we go.) History: continue OUP World in Ancient Times Science: GHF Online: Fundamentals in Plant Biology Lots of read alouds and interest led reading It seems a lot more put together than I thought. I want simple, cheap, and get-er-done but still appealing enough to not turn off my non-workbook kid.) Spelling: AAS probably the last half of 4 and then 5. She's almost finished with 3 now. Still AAS, but probably just 4, she's slowed down. Literature: Probably just a list made by me from searching other lists ;) Science: RSO Bio2 w/ microscope labs. History: HO middle ages Tech: I'm thinking coding and robotics, but I'm not certain yet and I have no idea what I'll use for it. I'm open to suggestions! (She has to have a separate tech class for our charter. It has to fall under technology, engineering, or entrepreneurship. This year she did engineering with legos, k'nex, and engino, so it doesn't have to be too deep. I'll have $150 to play with :) She is (surprisingly) not interested in coding. We're doing Tinker crate instead. Extracurricular: I don't know yet, but she's loving theater this year, so maybe we'll do that again. I'd also like to get her back into tumbling. She dropped it when she started theater (she does not like a full schedule), but her OT says she needs it. Ninja warrior style training class that will do parkour 1x/month. Other: We are in an amazing co-op but I won't know what classes she'll be in until August. We usually have really good options for kids her age. Science: Life Science year using WTM recommendations - Probably Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia, Animalium, The Way We Work, The Life of Plants Series Latin: Latin for Children B Keyboarding: ?? Logic: CTC's Basics of Critical Thinking Art: Looking for an online drawing class?? Plus Morning Time as a family. As a result he's more or less on the same level for most things as DS #3 who will be in Grade 4. Geography: group subject, mix of BYL 7 and 0. I know 0 is below his level, but he's not ready for 7 as-is. History: SOTW 3 Early Modern (group subject) Science: Mr. Q (group subject) + Mystery Science Math: MM 4-5, wherever he ends up after this year Language Arts: Fix It (currently doing book 1) will finish this if not completed and then try Editor in Chief Sequential Spelling Vocabulary from Classical Roots 4-5 Canadian Handwriting (whichever book he's at) Writing & Rhetoric (whichever book he's at) French: Some mix of Getting Started with French, CAP's French for Children A, and DuoLingo.
