SAT2 Subject Tests

Aside from math, which SAT2 tests did your dc take? Any feedback appreciated. Easier is better, as all of the SAT2's are distasteful.

We just realized dd will only have one opportunity to take Japanese with listening and she'd like to pick a third test in case her Japanese scores aren't high enough. I think it's rotten that they only offer Japanese once a year, and official prep materials are almost nonexistent.

We did the English Lit as an extra in an already paid for sitting. One practice exam for timing practice the day before.

I sympathize with the Japanese. The language exams are a pain. That being said the French exam without listening was a good one and offered every single time I think.

We did not take it but I have heard positive things about World History without a whole lot of review. If the English Lit doesn't work try that sample exam.

My kids did Math Level I, Physics, Chemistry, U.S.History, English Lit, and Latin.

My kids actually LIKED taking the tests. They said that it provided incentive to really learn the material and master it as a whole -- a sort of really well-done final exam that forces the student to assimilate the material in a way that they don't have to just for individual exams.

Note -- don't bother doing the Math Level I if your student has the background for Math Level 2. Math Level 2 has an easier curve and covers higher-level math, so there really is no reason to take Math Level 1.

My junior is planning Math 2 (following precalc) and Latin (following Latin III) for June and US History for May, six days before the APUSH exam.

I am annoyed about the physics subject test/AP mismatch.  When the topic of the subject test schedule comes up, dd keeps asking me about the physics one (which is amazing to me), but she will only have had AP Physics 1 and so would need to self-teach - unlikely to happen.  She's taking AP Physics C next year, but I doubt the missing topics would be covered in time for the last SAT date for EA apps, if they're even in the course.

(Um what did I just say?  Something about college apps being completed a mere nine months from now?  Phew, at least I'm not a homeschool parent/counselor.  But where did the time go?)

My oldest has taken Math 2 and Physics subject tests last June. Two was his max in one morning. He is taking Chemistry this June after AP Chemistry. He’ll take German and/or Chinese subject test as a convenient way to check the foreign language box. He is thinking of taking the world history subject test but has not decided on that. So he would have a minimum of four subject tests.

I have already taken my oldest through SAT physics test last June and my youngest is taking in June. It is very conceptual and learning from a test prep book is sufficient if she has done conceptual physics in some form previously. AP Physics 1 is insufficient in coverage as the closest match is the old AP Physics B. Is she taking both the AP Physics C Mechanics and the AP Physics C Electricity and Magnetism next year? Would August work for her physics subject test?

My youngest took Math 2 subject test last August after AoPS intermediate algebra because he wanted to give it a try.

Thanks - maybe I'll get a book and see.  Physics C will be both Mech and E&M.  We are saving the August date for one more SAT1.  Then the last possible SAT2 for EA would be Oct, technically, though I'm guessing she'll have about twenty five thousand other more important things to do around that time.  I don't think it's crucial for her to have it; it just would have been a nice addition.

Get the Princeton Review SAT Physics. The Barron’s one is for people like my oldest who needs test prep harder than actual to give him a scare. The one by CollegeBoard is actually rather good for their practice tests but doesn’t have any reviews, it is just a thin book of practice tests with solutions.

Just a FYI, my oldest needed to review his calculus for AP Physics C Electricity and Magnetism because he has forgotten a little due to lack of practice. It is a nice time hog.

Excellent - thanks - I'll look for the book.  Calc 1 is on the menu for this summer though we haven't decided on CC vs some form of self-study or tutoring.  Fortunately, dd is motivated by watching her friends concurrently enrolled in both Phys C and calc flounder for the first few months.
