VENT Mergers suck x-(

So this is the second time dh has been through a major corporate merger. I'd hoped it would be better than the last, but sadly, no.

First, he had to, for all intents and purposes, skip a week's pay in order to get his payday in line with the new company's. He will get that money back in the end, whenever that is, but we're already starting the month short.

Then he was finally paid, but only his salary. He makes a decent salary but he also earns commission, and we rely on at least part of his commission to cover monthly expenses. In the past, he's been paid salary and commission in one check. Nobody seemed to know when commission would be paid. Finally HR said January 26. We already had to take money out of savings to cover bills because that's so late in the month.

Today is January 26. We woke up, and no commission. He texted some coworkers, and it looks like they were paid, although mostly in the wrong amounts (less than they were owed). He got nothing.

We are lucky that we have savings and can weather this until it gets straightened out. But really. Why do companies roll these things out when they clearly have NO CLUE what they're doing? Why does it all have to happen at once? Is it really worse for Payroll to have to process two sets of checks for a few months than for your employees to have to scrounge around because you didn't pay what they EARNED and you PROMISED?

We have learned to live on commission, which is a nightmare in and of itself because it's never a straightforward calculation, and the company will take every possible opportunity to screw you. DH spends a good 2-5 extra hours each week trying to make sure he's paid what he's earned. Even then it's mostly a losing battle. But for the love of all that's holy, AT LEAST PAY HIM SOMETHING!

The last merger resulted in him being laid off, so I guess this time around I should just be happy he's keeping his job.

I feel your pain. It’s been 18ish months since the company my husband works for was bought out. He still has benefits and IT issues regularly! Just this week we learned that his vision, dental, and HSA benefits had been dropped for the year. If he has noticed by 12/31, he could have gotten it fixed. But his pay stub was late, then he kept getting the run around, and now it’s too late. Fortunately we at least have medical insurance! We can’t figure out why that didn’t get dropped.

Well, he just got paid. About 25% of what he's owed. And they still owe him from previous months when they screwed up his commission, which supposedly was going to be fixed this month. Sigh.

That sucks. Is there an office he can go to and park his butt until they cut him a correct check?

Nope. Not even a phone number. They have to do it all online. And it's on him to PROVE that they made a mistake.

The two companies were huge before and now it's one monstrous behemoth. The old company was at least fairly organized.

Wow. I had no idea. Is it different for take-overs? A company I worked for was taken over (bought out, you could say merged but my company was much smaller than the one taking it over) by a large, international, top 50 of the Fortune 500 company. We had absolutely no hiccups on paychecks, benefits, or anything. It was painful, but seamless. They changed all sorts of benefits and policies, but we always got paid on time.

I hope they get it figured out soon!

On Paychecks:  I remember when DH started at his current job. They collect your hours at the end of the month and on the 15th of the month. They pay on the 10th (for the second half of the previous month) and the 25th (for the first half of the month). He started his job on the 3rd of the month, so he didn't get a paycheck until the 25th. HR was very used to people who start the job needing to get an advance on their first paycheck due to all the moving expenses and it taking so long to get that first check. I thought it was a really long month!

I have found, at least as far as dh's experiences have gone, that the larger the corporation, the less they care about their employees. The bigger the company was that bought out or merged with his current company, the worse the experience.  :grouphug:

Ugh. That stinks.

My husband's previous employer was sold to a larger competitor. There was not a financial drawback for us, but they reorganized the company structure, and DH's specific job was eliminated. He was transferred to a different department and given a job that he despised. He endured that for two years before he was hired by his current company and was able to switch back into his preferred type of work. He was truly miserable at work for awhile.

I hope it all works out for your husband and ends up being a good situation in the end, even though it's a painful transition.

And if you are a small, successful company, you are a prime target for a buyout by a giant impersonal corporation.

I use to work in banking.   The first time I was part of a merger, I worked for a bigger bank that bought a smaller bank.  It totally stunk.   Later, I moved to a small bank that eventually got bought by a bigger bank, and that stunk too.

Reshuffling is usually not very fun.
