umsami
If so, what did you think. Thinking of using them at a memorial service.
Laurie
I'm sorry for your loss. Our local newspaper has a "rant and rave" feature. Recently, someone ranted about one of these lanterns: https://www.seattletimes.com/life/rant-rave-new-years-celebration-almost-burned-down-the-house/ (I'm very afraid of the lanterns becoming more popular. The illegal fireworks that people set off on the 4th of July are worry enough.)
Ottakee
Do they have metal wire in them? If so, I would hesitate. That wire can harm wildlife and any farm animals that may ingest or come into contact with it.
Mothersweets
I've never used them, sorry! But I do think they are beautiful. There is an annual festival here where thousands of the lanterns are set off. I've always wondered how the lanterns don't set everything on fire? Do they burn themselves out and disintegrate up in the air? How does it work?
Katy
Sorry for your loss. No, never used them, but I looked them up after seeing them in that episode of American Housewife a few weeks ago. There's tons on Amazon that are 100% biodegradable and I would feel comfortable using them in Florida, knowing they would likely end up in the ocean. Obviously fire season is a factor. If it's not too dry in your area I would absolutely use them IF they are 100% biodegradable and it's not so dry they would ignite a forest fire, and you are in a rural area away from flammable roofs. Make sure to read reviews -apparently it takes a bit longer for the wax to ignite than you might think from watching videos of them.

That wire can harm wildlife and any farm animals that may ingest or come into contact with it. The ones we like have no metal. https://www.birando.com/white-eco-wish-lantern#tab-5
Katy
whoops - this article says they are illegal in Florida if you release more than 10 at a time: https://fortmyersbeach.news/sky-lanterns-beautiful-but-dangerous-and-now-illegal/
KatieJ
There was a large scale event here where thousands were sent up at one time. There was reports of some malfunction and they came down still on fire. Our daughter brought several over after that event. They take longer to light than you think but we never had one come back down. Here’s an article. http://www.mlive.com/artprize/index.ssf/2013/09/looking_for_lights_in_the_night_2_why_you_wont_see_an_encore_performance_in_2013.html I realize you are not talking about an event of this size. Sorry for your loss.
ThisIsTheDay
They are illegal in a majority of states. We set them off one New Year's Eve. They were SOOO fun!! But then I started watching them come down, and I was terrified they'd burn someone's car or start a fire. You would think that between four adults (who were not drinking!), at least one would have thought this was not a good idea! I was a little late. I checked the next day, and sure enough, they are illegal in my state.
bibiche
Where we summer people send them up often, and they are indeed lovely, but I have seen them crash and burn and that part is a little scary. I'm sorry for your loss. :grouphug:
umsami
Thanks everybody. Checked and they are illegal where I live (fall under fireworks category). We may do floating lanterns on the river my parents live on instead. :)
Carrie12345
They make a lovely image, but they terrify me. Locally, there's an annual event that sends up thousands. We are a heavily wooded area, and lanterns litter the roads and trees for a long time. That annoyed me enough, but then I watched some compilation of lantern disaster videos. Not so great for my mental health!
Miss Tick
I saw one tethered at an event this summer. That was nice and seemed less dangerous. Although, "illegal" May trump that anyway.
mom2scouts
Check your local laws. They are completely illegal in my area and our fire chief says they start too many fires.
Tenaj
Here's another idea for you . . At my brother's burial a white homing pigeon (maybe a dove?) was released. They released it at the cemetery and it flew off to return to its roost. Very neat idea I thought and a beautiful visual.
