IfIOnly
Earthquake off the Alaska coast. Just wanted to help get the alert out. :( "Officials in Anchorage warned coastal areas, saying there was "extraordinary threat to life or property"." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/world-us-canada-42786107 Edited January 23, 2018 by IfIOnly

(((((Hugs)))))) I hope so too. I'm not sure if it's prime fishing season, but I'm especially concerned for the boats and fishermen in the waters along the coast or docked even. Lots of hugs from me to the folks up there too. Edited January 23, 2018 by IfIOnly
Sarah CB
From what I can see, it doesn’t look like Victoria, BC is in any danger. Does anyone see a warning for southern Vancouver Island? I’m nowhere near, but most of my extended family is peacefully asleep in Victoria right now. I’m nowhere near, but most of my extended family is peacefully asleep in Victoria right now. I just read these areas of Vancouver Island have warning: -British Columbia, The Juan de Fuca Strait coast, the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, the central coast and northeast Vancouver Island, and the north coast and Haida Gwaii FB Crisis Page: https://www.facebook.com/crisisresponse/the-earthquake-in-the-gulf-of-alaska-jan23-2018/about/?source=story_header I think Victoria is on the southeast side, which does not have a warning, IF I'm understanding correctly. Tap
CNN reports that a buoy registered 38 foot wave. They didn't say where it was located or what direction it was headed, just that it appears that a tsunami was created.
IfIOnly
Here's another source with live updates from the Kodiak police dept. Most recent update: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/tsunami-live-latest-updates-today-warning-earthquake-california-canada-washington-alaska-oregon-bc-a8173606.html The Kodiak PD update about water leaving the harbour is the first reliable report about the channel clearing in Alaska. But a number of other reports on social media suggest the same. If true, that is a worrying sign: the waters move back as the wave gathers, and so a substantial amount of change in sea levels could suggest something large on its way. Amira
Kodiak Island went through this after the 1964 earthquake when parts of the island were destroyed. The tsunami also affected a lot of other areas along the pacific coast. I hope it’s not that bad this time. http://www.kodiak.org/1964_earthquaketsunami and http://cwis.usc.edu/dept/tsunamis/alaska/1964/webpages/index.html

Thankfully this quake was downgraded from an initial recording 8.2 to 7.9. I did not know about the 1964 quake. That is awful. TravelingChris
Wow, a 9.2! Thankfully this quake was downgraded from an initial recording 8.2 to 7.9. I did not know about the 1964 quake. That is awful. My best friend in junior high (and we just reconnected on Facebook last year;) ) was a baby living in Anchorage at that time. Her mom told me all about how the harbor went out and what it was like. I really hope no lives are lost.

EMS83
:hurray: But will that water go somewhere else, or it just didn't do much? Not one of my strong subject. :confused1:

I believe it's Opilio or winter crab season. ETA: Most of those fishermen are in the Bering Sea north of the Aleutian islands. Hopefully does not cause problems for them. The tsunami warning of the West coast was cancelled. Edited January 23, 2018 by Liz CA

GoodGrief
It didn't feel super strong where we are (Anchorage area, where the bulk of the population is); the epicenter was quite a bit south. I would have slept through it but my husband is a light sleeper, lol. It was pretty long though. A friend in Kodiak did have to evacuate to high ground as a precaution. frogger
Never felt it and slept through all my text warning notifications. Of course, we bought up high on gravel so as not to deal with Tsunamis and ground liquidification because all my family (I wasn't born yet) went through the '64 quake. My mother still can't comprehend why the city allowed massive building on the west side of Anchorage where she remembers the ground having major liquidification problems not to mention land slides into the inlet. Those in Kodiak probably felt it but it was pretty far away from most Alaskans.
