DawnM
Someone on her recently talked about buying modular furniture that can be taken apart and put together and configured differently as desired. Can anyone tell me some brands to look for online and how things have held up? We have a company here that does it (just saw the commercial) and it is very expensive. regentrude
Isn't that the principle behind most of IKEA's systems?
DawnM
I haven't really looked at IKEA because I have never had their stuff hold up well. Someone here mentioned another brand. Locally we have something that is roughly $1000 per chair section. Maybe that is the cost for quality? I don't really know, although that is a bit out of range for what we want to spend. Wheres Toto
I've had mixed results with IKEA. The dressers we've had stink, the Billy bookcases are great. Bed has been okay but the slats they sell didn't work well, we had to cut plywood to fit instead. One of the ones mentioned here recently was Home Reserve. They had sectionals with storage.
SparklyUnicorn
We have a couch and chair from Home Reserve. It's not reconfigurable, but it's stuff that comes in a box that you assemble yourself. It's good for small rooms and you can replace parts of it. It's "ok" stuff, but I would not say it's super duper high quality awesome or anything like that. It suits our needs. The couch and chair do have storage under the cushions. It's not a ton of space though. I mostly keep crap in it truth be told. Stuff like knickknacks given as gifts (I have nowhere to put knickknacks which is why they end up there).
KungFuPanda
These fascinate me, but I don’t own any.

Spryte
We have Home Reserve, like Sparkly. You can order any configuration you want, and you can order more/different pieces to change things up later. We added to our piece after having it a few months and deciding to change the configuration. It’s shipped in pieces and you have to assemble it. It wasn’t hard. We bought it because our rescue dog has issues, and she ate our leather couch. Ouch. We chose the Home Reserve option because we can replace it piece by piece if she does that again - it’s all replaceable. I worry less that way. I don’t love the storage underneath - with the exception of the chaise piece, it’s awkward to use. The covers come off and ours can be washed. We have the Pet Care fabric. Definitely order fabric swatches. :)

Spryte
I’m 4’11. But you probably know that! I think it’s comfy. But I tend to tuck my legs under me when I sit. If you want your feet flat on the floor and your rear touching the back cushion - maybe not? My mother and MIL like it. One 5’, one like 5’5. They can get up easily, rather than feeling stuck in it. It looks nice, it’s working for us. Not my dream sectional, but we prefer leather.

Just not sure of the results.

I'm a bit over 5ft and I have to say the HR couch is one of the few that is fairly comfortable to me because it's not too soft. The old set we have (I still have it) was too soft and was made up of a lot of pillows. I hate that.

We just tried one cushion cover first, in case it didn’t work.

jak of in
My dd (25) also bought from Home Reserve. She brought from there so she wouldn't have to have help getting the sofa up to her apartment, or have to be home for it to be delivered. It is shipped in boxes and has to be assembled. Like others have said, it's probably not the most comfortable sofa, but it works well for her. When she moves, she can detach the pieces from each other and it will be much easier...more like moving a few chairs instead of a full sofa. She liked the challenge of putting it together by herself. She said the hardest part was getting the cushions inside the fabric covers. Her cover is a darker brown microfiber.

We now have a tight space with a separate staircase that is narrow and has a landing and then curves, so a traditional sofa or sectional will be impossible to get up there. I am looking at Home Reserve stuff and the mid-range fabric. If we are fairly gentle with our stuff, this should last a while, shouldn't it? Just checking. The other option is to order two Lazy Boy love seats, matching, as they come apart (backs come off and each chair unhooks) but it won't have the sectional look/feel, unlesss there is is something I haven't thought of that would work in there? My goal is to get everything by Christmas. LoveSac is out, $5500 for the configuration we have looked at plus tax.

The old fabric was fine, looked new, I just wanted a color change. We’ve replaced a few cushions that the dog chewed. So it was worth it, for us. It’s held up well, cushions have kept their shape, and it looks like it did when we bought it. I like it. I’m not in love with it, and if we didn’t have this crazy dog, we’d have something else. But it works! For a space like you’re describing it might be a good option.
DawnM
Guess I should clarify. The space itself isn't small or tight, but the staircase is. I honestly don't know how they got up the sofa they left for us up there. And now I wish they hadn't left it. I don't want it. We may end up cutting it up to trash it. So I do see that La Z Boy does have ind. pieces that can hook together, and the backs come off. DH would prefer that because the backs are higher, to lean your head back on, and they have recliner parts. But they are really expensive. I really don't want to spend $5k on a sofa. OY! Decisions. alexsandro22
Modular furniture is the most comfortable as for me and it doesn't require a lot of space to be set. I used to read blogs and reviews https://cozyhousetoday.com/top-30-loft-beds-with-extra-storage-space to decide what kind of furniture to take. And the price of such furniture is not too big wich stimulates.
DawnM
Ok, I have sat with DH and son to see what might fit everyone's needs and I have discovered that to make everyone happy (including me as my happiness will be to NOT spend $3500 on a sofa!) we are going to probably go with a smaller sectional modular style sofa (I am finding there are several of them, not just the two mentioned earlier in this thread) and a separate recliner for DH. That way, DH can have his own chair in that room when he comes up. AND, that way we can get everything up there in that tight staircase easily. Angie in VA
I dream of owning a LoveSac sectional. I don't dream of spending so much for one. It sounds like you've found your solution, but Love Sac does runs sales (get on their email list), and I have seen Love Sac offered at Costco for a reduced price. Limited color and fabric selections, but you end up getting some pillows or drink holders for ex for free. Just yesterday I told Dh that if we had a Love Sac sectional, we could move it around, make a double bed out of it (2 chairs, and uses Queen sized sheets, I think?) and have a movie marathon.
