Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2018

Recommended Posts

My daughter just got word that she received a gold key in our regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her science fiction short story. Anyone else have a student who won a regional award so that we can all celebrate together?

My daughter set up an account at artandwriting.org From there you enter your zip code and it connects you with your regional program. Each region has a different process and different deadlines it seems, so we found that a bit confusing. Our region separates art and writing - they are run by two different groups. There is a lot of info about art, very little about writing.

I recommend looking at it early to be sure you have enough time to figure out the process. Our submission range was Sept to early January and I helped my daughter set up her account in August so that we could look through everything first. This is the first year she was eligible to submit her writing.

Congrats to your daughter! That is so exciting!!!

My poor dd missed the deadline by one day - and it was totally my fault (long story, but the fault was completely mine). She can enter next year, but it won't be the same. *sniff*

I'm so sorry! Good luck to her next year.

How does a student enters? I tried following the instructions to become familiar for when my child is old enough to enter and contacted the person in our city never heard back. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

We submitted through here:  http://www.artandwriting.org/what-we-do/the-awards/how-to-enter/

Dd16 submitted photography and dd12 submitted a portrait that she sketched.  There is also a Senior Portfolio thingie that we plan to do in a couple of years.

You can see previous winners on their website.  My daughters were kinda disappointed with the artwork from the previous winners, because they said the art was very homogenous.  Like it looked like the judges were looking for a certain kind of art.  There was no artwork like the stuff my daughters submitted.  *shrug* Oh, well.  My kids are probably just weird.  This was our first year doing this.

In my region, it seems the same organizations that run the writing classes judge the entries. Which might explain the aesthetic, I guess?

But I don’t really know. Each region seems to have their own deadlines/ways of doing things, I’m just learning. For example, the teacher for the piece needs to submit a form as well.

It is through the art and writing website.  I love this competition because it doesn't specify school.  It is literally a barcode.  I feel like more homeschoolers win these because they are not slighted.  My older dd always did very well, took several gold keys and even a gold on her senior portfolio for writing.

Congrats! Last year was my  daughter's first year. She got an honorable mention in the same category.

If I remember correctly, a few years ago at a gold key ceremony they mentioned that to place one needs to be in the top 30% of submissions.  So an Honorable mention is not as easy to get as one may think.  You must be better than 70% of the other submissions in that category.  I think silver is the top 20%, gold is the top 10%.

We just heard from our region today and my daughter's flash fiction was awarded Honorable Mention! She's excited as this was her first year of eligibility and she only submitted the one piece. She's now planning to submit multiple pieces next year.

Congratulations!

Congrats to all of your students.  Dd earned 2 Gold Keys and 2 Silver Keys this year (3 were chalk pastel drawings and one was colored pencil on a black background.)  She in taking AP Studio Art at the local high school which has a very strong art department.  She is just packing up the originals to take to school for  showcase next weekend.

What a wonderful resource for you to be able to tap into.  Congrats to your dd!

Just wanted to join this thread because our region's awards were announced today and my son was awarded three silver keys and an honorable mention! Very proud of him!

The silver keys were for: personal memoir; short story; and science fiction/fantasy

The honorable mention was for science fiction/fantasy

This was the first year we knew about this- and he is senior.

All in all, so glad he entered.

Congratulations! Yes, I wish I had known about this opportunity back when my daughter, also a senior, was in 7th grade. I did find out a couple of years later, but it took me until last year to convince her to enter anything.

Well, we actually did get something - Lol!  Dd12 got an Honorable Mention for "drawing & illustration".  She did a portrait in graphite of the 2 year-old wearing huge, chunky headphones.   :coolgleamA:   It wasn't her drawing that won.  It was his cuteness.   :tongue_smilie:

Just kidding.  Her art teacher was really excited!

I mentioned this to dd's art teacher and she actually knew what I was talking about.  She talked us (well, and dd) about how judges will have a particular preference for certain kinds of pieces and how that carries on into the professional art world (and I know absolutely nothing about the art world).  She was showing us pictures of artists who had a hard time selling pieces, but were producing some amazing artwork.  Oh, well.  I'm glad we did the competition.  We learned a lot.  Both dds want to try again next year.

Probably even more of an issue in visual arts than writing. Our region hasn’t announced yet. (!!). Since DS threw his stuff together literally by midnight day of deadline, while in the middle of finals (I care more about the college grades than the scholastic) I don’t expect anything, but the exercise is valuable, I agree.

I think this holds true in many spheres -- including the writing part of the contest. Even in horse shows sometimes judges have preferences for horse color or other factors that affect the judging.

Both when my teen places in a contest and when she doesn't, I always mention that a different day or a different judge and the outcome might have been different. Hope and humility... a two-for-one special.  ;)

:hurray:   to those students who placed!

:grouphug:  to those who didn't!

True, and I also tell DS that writing in the absence of any outside evidence that you’re any good is a gift. Thankfully a long-lasting gift in our case😂 (I didn’t like his story last year and didn’t let him enter it).

Dd and her fellow artists think that the more pretentious the title, the better the piece placed ... at least in our area.  This year, she paid a lot of attention to the titles of her pieces.  Last year, the one with a snarky title got a silver when a better piece was passed over.
