Just curious -- anyone have a "smeller" here?

My 6.5yo dd has taken up smelling everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Each bite of food, before she eats it, she smells it. She grabs her clothes and smells them before she puts them on. She smells her pencils, she smells the markers, the paper -- she's got to smell everything.

It's just a new one for me...

I only caught dd smelling markers. Buying scented markers started that. (I won't do that again). She tried smelling cleaning products, which I informed her was not a good idea (even though we use more naturl stuff).

I would not be surprised by any harmless phase young kids go though! You could write a book about each child I'm sure! :001_smile:

My BIL is one too. I think it's some genetic thing.

I'm a non-smeller. I have explicitly asked to be excluded from participating in any smelling. I got tired of the smellers handing me stuff (clothes, food, etc.) and putting it under my nose and ordering me to "smell this." I put them on notice that if something "smells bad" then they do not have to shove it under my nose for verification. I trust them. Why would someone share a bad smell with another person?

This is a pet peave of mine, so I will step off my soap box.

End of Rant.

Kim

My 6yo has always smelled everything...food, soaps in public bathrooms, clothes. When she was doing taekwondo, often the kids would lose their belts and at the end of class the instructors would put them back on everyone. She would smell her belt to make sure it was hers and if it wasn't she knew exactly whose it was.

In general, I like to "smell" things too... but, I don't bring every fork-full or spoon-full of food to my nose to get a closer whiff... I like the smell of leather, the smell of a clean bathroom, etc. -- and foul odors, especially when pregnant, can make me wretch horribly (there was this one time, when my dog just had to roll around in fresh manure... I tried to do the right thing there, but my dh husband couldn't handle listening to me continually heaving... :D).

I shampoo her hair with the same shampoo every time, and every time, she has to smell it first. She does the smell the soap thing in the restroom too. It's a bit funny.

Well, I guess smelling everything isn't as bad as my older son chewing his shirts! (Thankfully, we seem to be through that phase!).

My husband never grew out of it! Mostly, he smells food on his fork before he takes the first bite.

However, my daughter has it too. She likes to smell everything! One thing she would do that made me want to die of embarrassment is that she would smell her fingers after she touched someone!   Thankfully, she stopped doing that when she was about 6.5yo, but she did for about two or three years even though I repeatedly told her it was impolite--(not to mention just plain weird)!

One of my three brothers is a smeller; he's adopted, so it's probably genetic but runs in his birth family. I've always had an overly sensitive nose compared to most, but he has a much keener sense of smell than I have. He would smell everything he handled. He still smells way more things than most people do, but he lives across the continent, so I don't see him often.

Of course, I'll bet people like this might do very well in the perfume industry. My brother works in office management, though.

DD age 4 has always been smeller. She smells everything. Her clothes, food, toys. When she was 2 she opened up all my bars of soap and spent two months walking around with them in a large bag and would smell them from time to time. We used to play with the washing, she would tell me who a shirt belonged to by just smelling it when it came out of the dryer. She was also able to identify each (about 7) dogs in our neighborhood by their bark at the age of 3, so I think her senses in general were just highly developed.

I wonder if my brother could do this. My mother says he smelled everything when he was little.

I still like to smell my books.

Maybe I shouldn't have shared that... :001_huh:

why not? a lot of books smell good. I have some that are very old - one over 100 years actually but I'll be giving it away for xmas - and they smell funny but still I like it. hmm... I don't _think_ I'm a smeller but now that you have brought it up...

"Hey I can smell Target all the way out here in the parking lot!" She then proceeded to discuss how much stronger and stronger the smell was getting as we walked across the long parking lot. I never really thought of Target having a specific smell, but I guess it does. Try it next time you're in a parking lot!

I have one smeller here...but he only does it with food/ drink and only in spurts...but when he does do it, it is practically every sip! We laugh that it is like Ray's brother on Everybody loves Raymond (he touched his food to his chin with each bite) ...but I suspect with my son it is more related to allergies and that subconsciously he smells it to get a better "taste" (food often tastes more bland to people who suffer from alleries/asthma) but this is just a guess...

DD is a smeller. She used to drive her cousins crazy when she had to sniff them from across the carseat! She was only two then and she's nine now. She no longer actively sniffs people, but her nose is just as good as before.

I thought the remark about allergies and asthma was interesting. DD is very sensitive to certain foods that she can't eat. Therefore, if she was given a food from an unknown source, she would smell it and then taste it very carefully before swallowing it to see if it was safe. I thought (without any facts to support this) that people with food sensitivities were probably better tasters then those of us with no food allergies.
