World Geography Year-Long Unit Study

I think that next year, I would like to do an in-depth World Geography year, instead of a history year. Kind of like MFW Exploring Countries and Cultures, but I was hoping to find something a bit cheaper. My kids will be 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades.

We have things that are working well for Writing, Grammar, Math, etc. I'd like the geography study to include maps, culture, cooking, etc. I would LOVE to have something already planned out. Any ideas?

We DIY’d “Continents & Cultures†this year. One month per continent; a week of overview, followed by a week each focused on three different countries. There is a wealth of information & inspiration available online. Add in a couple good spines like Usborne’s Encyclopedia of World Geography & Flags of the World to go along with library books & it’s pretty straight-forward! Especially with the ages you have, since they could each read & share information with the group on their own level.

We used Galloping the Globe many years ago but wanted to say it was one of my all time favorites. It allowed me to incorporate all sorts of enthusiastic purchases I had made over the years in a sort of organized fashion. For instance my Zoobook subscription actually got used beyond a quick look. We loved the science book they paired with it too. Each child made a planet mobile that I still have somewhere. We paired it with a Geography Song cd that I already had. I suspect we could all still sing them!

I planned one out myself, partly using some of the things in Trail Guide to World Geography.  We ended up dropping it last school year when life fell apart, and we really haven't picked it up again this year as I'd have liked, but I think we will return to it next year.

Some of the components in our study:

-World Monuments -- picture study -- my kids find this really fascinating.

-Geography Through Art -- projects and sketches of animals and such

-some world music -- Putamayo has a lot of good CDs

-What We Eat -- my 9yo really likes this book and all the different diets from around the world

-animals from various areas

-a little mapwork

-world capitals
