Morning movies at theaters

Depends on the movie.  We saw the latest Star Wars movie at a 9:15am showing on a Friday.  Glad we didn't go any later, because we didn't get out of there until about 1:00pm.  They generally only open that early for blockbusters that will sell out at later times or on special days.

We usually go to the Sunday morning shows.  The "agnostic matinee".

I remember morning movies when I was a young adult. It wasn't all movies in the theater, only select ones. I can't see movie times for this coming weekend yet. They haven't been released I guess. An early Sunday movie would be fun. Then DH can go with me. I want to see Jumanji.

Movies start in the afternoon here too during the school year anyway.  (I haven't checked during the summer).  But it makes sense since they don't want to pay for staff to be there when most people are not free to go to the movies.

Also, if a good percentage of their employees are students, it may be difficult to staff during school hours.

At least one theater here has them and they are super cheap. They call it the wake-up matinee. A bunch of theaters also have a cry-baby matinee which is adult movies but you can bring a baby or kid. It’s designed for parents at home. Those are usualy in the mornings.

This. I knew there was something that moms and little kids went to in the mornings.

In most areas, it's just not cost effective.

Our theater does summer $1 movies one morning a week, but they're all second-run kiddie movies that don't cost much for them to run.

"A film booker leases a movie to a particular theater for a set period of weeks. The percentage of ticket sales that the studio takes decreases on each week that a movie is in the theater... During the film's opening week, the studio might take 70 to 80 percent of gross box office sales. By the fifth or sixth week, the percentage the studio takes will likely shrink to about 35 percent"

I'm guessing it's much lower for last year's cartoons.

And almost no one buys concessions at 9am.

We have morning movies year round, some showings are opera etc. that are not shown later in the day, but then it is a 15 screen theater complex, and we have a large population here to support it. And $5 all showings all day Tuesdays, and before 4pm Mon, Wed, Thurs. A lot of morning/daytime employees are older adults, the teens take over working evening hours.
