vonfirmath
We have Yahtzee Jr -- but my daughter REALLY wants to use the number dice. (She's 6) She can play "up" some games (rummikub, Skip-Bo). She's advanced, but not THAT advanced when it comes to numbers. She is not good enough at adding up numbers to deal with the numbers in Yahtzee. Anyway way to modify the rules in Yahtzee proper to play with a younger child? Ideally it would also have some adding involved -- just smaller numbers. Using Yahtzee to practice adding and subtracting up to about 20 would be great!
Lucy the Valiant
We used to play only the top half or bottom half of the score card when we had a younger player. :)
vonfirmath
We used to play only the top half or bottom half of the score card when we had a younger player. :) That would be great. The top half only is VERY similar to the rules in Yahtzee JR, but you look at numbers instead of faces of cartoon characters. and BOTH players can get 4-of-a-kind in a particular number! EMS83
Or team up. Let her do whatever she can, and the more grown up team member can do the rest.
SparklyUnicorn
I'd just keep score for my kid and occasionally challenge him/her to add some of the numbers. That's basically what I did.
TechWife
We played it with my son from a very young age (five, maybe). We just talked him through strategies and helped him score his roll, it was no big deal.
theelfqueen
I played yahtzee with my grandmother regularly as a child. I learned so much math that way! Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Mothersweets
I played Yahtzee with my grandparents :) it brings back so many good memories. We played like several posters mentioned above, talking out strategies and helping to add everything up. It really is great math practice.
Renthead Mommy
It might make it easier if there were numbers not dots. Yatzee is not that hard, especially if she can play Rummikiub, but sometimes the dots get in the way. Try wraping the dice in masking tape and writing the numbers on each side instead. If the adding is still hard, give her a cheat sheet to work with. It will help with memorizing facts.
hjffkj
I would just got slowly and help her figure out the math to her rolls.
Chris in VA
We just have a scorekeeper. Can she skip count? She can count by 2s, 3s, etc when she's playing the upper part to get a score for each box. She can also practice tallying if you want.
