What baby stuff do I “need?

My essentials are:

carseat (I personally like the larger bucket seats because I feel like they fit infants better and because they make it easier to switch between cars, which I do pretty often with a small baby -- I only take my big van when I have to.)

diapers, wipes, something to put under the baby for changes

sling, wrap, mei tai, soft structured carrier -- some combination; I like to have at least one thing that I can put on very quickly and at least one thing that is comfortable for long periods.  I love a ring sling and a stretchy wrap for newborns, a woven wrap for non-newborn infants who sleep a lot, a mei tai for an all purpose carrier, and an SSC for older babies on my back.

some sort of bag that can carry diapers, wipes, and a wet bag

some way to feed the baby (and nursing bras and pads)

footie jammies, especially for winter babies

some sort of clothing -- onesies and maybe a few socks for summer babies (because their little feet would get cold with the AC on), side-fastening kimono shirts and pants or one piece outfits for cooler weather

hats -- some sort of sun hat for summer and some warm hats for winter

a few blankets -- something sturdy enough for floor time, maybe something for wrapping/sunshade/extra layer of warmth, something warm or a shower-cap style cover for the carseat

some sort of booster or seat for the little one to sit in at the table when they want to sit with everyone else

some sort of baby gate or other barrier to keep the little one out of rooms that have stairs or small toys like LEGO

something safe for the baby to hold or chew on

Everything else is just gravy.

Chewy necklace that you (mom) wear. If Dad is a big baby holder, I saw a baby friendly tie that I think has a teething toy in it?

Nursing cover, love the infinity scarf and wish I had for all the earlier kids.

swiffer pads for the crawling baby's tummy :D jk

this is the first kid I had a nursing chair with, if you don't have one I'd highly recommend considering it!

I'm asking myself the same question about to have #4.

I'm having dh set aside $500 of our tax return to stock up on diapers and wipes. That's #1.

I have used the same infant carseat for my first 3, but it expired so I'm getting a new one.

I have an ergo carrier which I loved, but dd was small in cold weather so I'm worried it may be too warm for my spring baby. I may wait and see on that.

I'm thinking of getting a better nursing cover.

Otherwise I'm good. I have a cosleeper she likely won't use, clothing all that I kept from dd.

I have boobs that I hope work well again for feeding a baby.

I'm ready

My newborns have never needed too much. A boob, a car seat, baby carrier, clothing and blankets, diapers and wipes and that's about it.

I had a surprise baby last year after an 11 year hiatus. I was in a panic trying to remember what all I needed. And then a trip to the store gave me an anxiety attack because so much had changed since my last baby a decade earlier! So I kept it simple.

Needs:

I breastfeed, so I bought a few nursing camisoles, a sleep nursing bra, and a light robe (I co-sleep, so can't snuggle in my covers.) Something that had changed since my last kid was that now you can get a free breast pump. So I did.

I also stocked up on nipple balm. My #5 gave me cracked nipples that hurt like hell. This baby nurses fine, so I've been using the balm on his chin to head off his drool rashes. If you don't nurse, you might want some sports bras to wear those first weeks while your milk dries up. And advil.

I dug my cloth diapers out of storage. They're over 20 years old and still working great!! I did buy some new covers and wet bags, which have come a LONG way. I bought new pins, and tried the Snappi but hated it. I changed my older kids on the floor, but I'm getting too old for that, so this time I bought a changing pad for my dresser.

Other than that I bought: a towel, three washcloths (one clean, one dirty, one to use - figuring they get washed twice a week with the diapers), two swaddle blankets and a car seat. I also bought a pack of $5 white washcloths from Walmart to use as burp rags. That was a gift I received for #3 that ended up being super useful so I've bought a new pack for every kid since. They so handy, and eventually become rags.

Oh yeah and with the last two kids I stocked up on two bags of Sonic ice. I love the hospital cups, and bring mine home. I fill it with my Sonic ice and a little water. It gets me through the day, especially when I get stuck in the rocking chair or something, nursing or holding the sleeping baby.

Extras:

I bathe babies in the sink, but some people prefer the infant tubs. I use just water, but you might want some baby wash.

It was nice to have baby emery boards because his nails grew so fast but he was too flailing when I tried the nail clippers!

The Medela brand microwave sterilizer bags are pretty handy, too. You can use them for pacifiers, bottles, pump parts, etc. I have a bad habit of sterilizing the breast pump parts on the stove, forgetting about them, and ruining my pump parts AND my pots. The bags save me. LOL

Cradles or a moses basket are super handy, especially if you co-sleep and don't want/need a crib. I get a ton of use out of mine.

Baby sling. I have the same old wrap that I used over 20 years ago with my first and it's like that my favorite pair of jeans. I don't mess with the newfangled buckles and things that are sold now. Slings have come such a long way since my first. I remember the Ergo being brand new and now it's on the shelf in every store in a million varieties! Something adjustable is perfect for those first months while your body is changing. And even if you don't wear your baby beyond those first few months, it really is nice to have the option when you first get home and still have to tend to the other children.

With #3, I had everything I needed already, so the two things I treated myself to were a portable diaper changing pad with room for diapers and wipes, and a nice ring sling. I already had an ergo - which I love - but I didn't use that till my babies were holding their heads up, and I wanted something to use with a small baby. Plus the sling folded into a diaper bag, which my ergo didn't really do. I got a lot of use out of both of them.

Are you getting many false alarms? That's the only thing that makes me hesitant.

Nope, we haven't gotten a single one yet and we've been using it for three months now. We've had dd wiggle her foot out of the sock a couple times when I didn't put it on tightly enough, and you get a yellow light and it plays a little song in that situation, but we've never had it give a false alarm.

The new thing I got for my third was a portable hooded bassinet. He slept so well in there in whatever room we went to the first couple months. As an added bonus, mine hooked into our stroller and was much nicer for walks than the bucket car seat.

If you formula feed, Baby Brezza is 100 times worth the money. Also one of those dishwasher baskets meant for bottle supplies is really nice and has many uses beyond bottles. A video monitor is a useful extra. I wish I had a swing, but I never had room for one.
