I downloaded MM7 and it will probably get it done but I am wondering if there is something else out there that will help her be more successful. I have to help her with math a lot...she basically gets it but could greatly benefit with some drill and kill this year... Though maybe something that doesn't seem like it. For her. Lol Maybe something spiral? TT algebra 1? Saxon? Which one? Ugh it's halfway through the year and I would like her to get through something and be solid before starting algebra in the fall. Another Lynn Posted January 12, 2018 Share Posted January 12, 2018 Horizons will spiral, but it will have bigger gaps before cycling back around to a topic and then instead of giving one or two of that type, it will have 5 or more. Here (several years back), that resulted in lots of re-teaching ("Mom, how do I do this kind again?") or the opposite ("Mom, I've got this, do I have to do all of these problems - they're exactly the same.") EKS Posted January 12, 2018 Share Posted January 12, 2018 (edited) Even though I'm not a Saxon fan, Saxon 8/7 works well for this. I wouldn't just hand it to her though--teach the lesson yourself and have her do the practice problems with you there. Then have her do the review set independently. ETA: Technically, Saxon isn't a spiral program--it's incremental--but I think it has what what you want, which is continual review. It would probably help to see samples from someone who has used the program and can explain the way they use them. Either way, I would also give a placement test. She knows how to do fractions, decimals, percents...I think she is "familiar" with anything that she will find in any prealgebra text, but because MM was so mastery, she just needs lots of practice to relearn and remaster what she has not done in awhile. When I was in school, Algebra 1/2 was considered the more advanced one, and 8/7 was under algebra 1/2, but I have heard from others that with more recent editions, 8/7 is considered the standard one, and algebra 1/2 is the extra practice one. hollyhock Posted January 13, 2018 Share Posted January 13, 2018 When mine had that issue (with Math Mammoth), we went to TT and it worked really well. He's now halfway through the pre-algebra and doing really well. We're just using the book, not the CD's. You could probably skip the first part of the book because it's all fractions, percents, etc. The actual algebra-type stuff starts about Chapter 7 or 9 or something.
