You can also see more about it in this blog article on Using Letter Tiles--the Additional Resources section has videos showing the basic and advanced features.

Thanks for mentioning the information videos. I noticed that in the advanced video, AAS was used for the example, but the syllable types didn't match what my AAS tiles have. My AAS tiles and books are old, are those syllable types new/changed? Or are those the AAR names? Why does the app not match?

It's just a video error.  I opened the app to AAS Level 3, Lesson 7, as shown in the video, and the syllable tags are the correct ones for AAS (the ones in the video are for AAR).

So are the tiles for the AAR lessons in the app too? (asks the woman who just bought it and could just get it loaded and look herself, lol)

lol  Yes, you get all the tiles for both AAR/AAS.  :)

Edited to clarify. :)

Wow, that's a definite buy, thanks! Am I seeing it correctly that you're getting ALL the lessons and tiles upfront?

You aren't getting the lessons, just the tile/whiteboard space. The drop downs to choose the lessons are to ensure that your student is only seeing the tiles that they have already learned about.

I bought it. It works very well and does exactly what I want. I do AAS with 3 kids in 3 different levels and already used the sound literacy app, which is similar. This one does a few other things that made it worth it like easier scrolling between groups of letters/phonograms, built in syllable tags, built in phonograms sounds, the easy ability to change tiles between girls.

:hurray:  My 9yo uses the tiles but she can make spelling a simple word take sooooo long by dragging the tile alllll over the board and making them stop and talk to one another. Spelling time will be cut in half with this!!

ETA: I've already downloaded it and played with it on my DDs kindle. Amazing! And now we can take spelling on the road with us if we want to. That's one subject we can never do anywhere except the school room for the tiles and board. Now it can go upstairs, outside, or even to a waiting room. YAY!

The syllable tags do match now. The video was made before the other style tag was added on.

LOL, that's hilarious! My son used to make tiles explode! I love that the app allows you to put all tiles away with one movement! (He could have made his explosion sound while doing that!) My dd also used to draw animals and objects around the words she made. Kids are so creative! Enjoy the quirks...they do grow up and one day you'll miss some of these little things!

Haha. Yes, DD also draws around her words. And when she's writing the letters she likes to make them either minuscule or reach from top to bottom of the board! Then she draws the heart of te-fiti symbol in the middle of her 'o's.  Most of the time I do just laugh with her and enjoy her creativity and silliness. But sometimes when we're getting a late start or on a time crunch to go somewhere.....then I would love to just get through it! We'll still use the board and tiles most of the time, but this is an amazing option to have! She loved using it for her lesson today. And it's just in time for DD5 to start AAR!

I bought it and it is terrible. It doesn't work at all on my Kindle Fire. The tiles are too small so it is easy to grab the wrong one. It is difficult to move the tiles to the correct position. More than half the time, the tiles went somewhere other than where we wanted. Once placed, we couldn't move them. It took many attempts to even clear the board so we could try again. It was a big bust for us. My daughter and I both gave up in frustration in a few minutes.

I wonder why it's not working well for you guys. We're also using it on a Kindle Fire and both of my kids loved it. There was a bit of a learning curve for DD9 to figure out just how to swipe the tiles so they went to the end of the word, but otherwise she's done well. They're a little bit too small for my fingers so I have a harder time, but 9yo did her whole lesson on the app yesterday. Any extra seconds it took to get a tile where we wanted was more than saved with one quick swipe to put the whole board away!

I bought it. My daughter likes it.

My wish list:

* be able to change the default syllable tags when "all tiles" is selected (the default is the AAR tags, my daughter has only ever used AAS)

* be able to make a custom group for tiles; this would make it easier to use with other phonics programs

We are using it on an iPad.  We had a bit of trouble getting some letters to drag onto the white space.  We also had trouble getting the words to divide into syllables.  Nothing major -  and it was still easier and quicker than using the real tile board...but I wouldn't complain if they were able to fix it so it had a better touch response...

Edited to update my review:  Just wanted to edit and say that after the update the tile manipulation has been flawless.  Very pleased with this app!!

Do email AALP--we'll work with you to get it working or make it right.

One way to get around this is to select All About Spelling Level 7 (Lesson 1 has most of the tiles but you could scroll down to the last lesson). That will have all of the spelling tiles and the spelling tags.

I have it on an iPad Mini, and it took me a few tries to get used to it, but now it's working for me. If you continue having issues, email AALP.
