Oh, I pulled it down as I thought I must have offended someone as a hundred people had looked, but no one responded:(. I had mentioned how excited I was at being able to get a couple things for our family, that while not expensive they were just not in budget after taking care of the pertinent curriculum needs several years in a row.

We are splurging on two vocabulary sets:

1.SAT vocab cards

2. Marie's words

I was just so excited, but thought people thought it silly to be excited about such "small" things.

I just found out today that my oldest is going to be able to do MFW AHL this year as a sweet lady sold me the set for the cost of just Notgrass plus my other choice for English. This is a huge big deal here, my son is thrilled!

Does anyone else have anything exciting planned special for this year that either time or finances usually keep you from doing?

Wow, that's awesome!!

I hope you enjoy all of your new materials! I suspect people didn't reply just because they didn't have anything to say--I doubt you offended anyone! WTM is a big place--it's not unusual for there to be lots of looks and not necessarily lots of answers.

I hope you have a great spring semester! Thanks for letting us share your joy :-).

Ime, when WTMers are offended, they are far more likely to let you know how offended they are than to ignore it out of disgust ;). I always know a controversial thread because of how *many* posts it collects in a short time.

:hurray:  SO excited for you.

I try to pick up one or two things as they come along. I haven't started planning for next year yet (although my kids will probably tell you they don't believe that), but I did order a couple of "scratch and dent" items from WTM Press yesterday - just in time for the snowstorm to keep them from being shipped.  :glare:  (History of the Medieval World was cheaper than what I could have gotten it on Amazon and I picked up something else for 1/3 the price of what it would have regularly cost. Shipping added enough to make it a wash, but I'm glad to support Susan and help the office get some more stuff out of the warehouse.  )

and sometimes reads are counted when various search index engines do their thing too.  I'm glad to know what you had posted.

Yes. one of the grandparents did not have a clue for christmas gift for my disabled child, so it was an amazon gift card. and now I can use that to buy some games the OT suggested to help my youngest. kinda neat.

That is awesome, and I believe in supporting publishers when you can afford it as well.  Susan's books are awesome!

That is such a blessing!  Special Education / Speech therapies can get expensive and exhausting at times, so anything that makes this more enjoyable both ways is so nice; I am happy for you.

P.S.  You are a fabulous mother.

P.S.S  My little Speech kiddo is doing much better, and will be 4 next month!

Yes, and sometimes a read is recorded if you hover over the topic.

I always wondered if hovering recorded a read! But I never knew one might be recorded through search engines--very interesting!

Not this year, but I remember the year that someone gifted us Sonlight 3 (now called D). That was a huge, incredible blessing! I bought our microscope that year (still a lot less than a SL package!)--I figured I wouldn't be able to afford that during a regular year. That was a blessing that paid off for years and years (my kids used the same microscope again in high school, enjoyed it both times, plus my dd loves biology and fostered an interest in that over the years). What an encouragement and blessing from God that all was!

It’s always exciting to get a good deal!! I get a thrill out of realizing the ratio of money paid to retail cost of what we use. (And then the stuff I buy full price I practically guard like another child, LOL. My AOPS books get laminated.)

It is so cool to look at ratios- you are my kind of lady!  I have a secret love of math, so I tell my son he "needs" to do LOF as well- with me-lol.

I was even more excited as I had eyed MFW and HOD for high school for the last several years, but was hoping to afford it, but doubted that I could.  So for us this was affording what we couldn't, literally my son had said this was the program that he wanted to do- and this showed him the Lord provides in His timing.  It was very special to him, and encouraged me a lot.  He wasn't even ready to begin this until March, so it was perfect timing.

Thank you for sharing.  I deeply appreciate hearing how the Lord blesses families, and how it affected their lives.  I believe here the Lord leads that he provides!

budget isn't there for it, and it isn't very exciting, but we will make it work-  just found out dd13 is going to get braces. Does that count? It will definitely take away splurge buying for a lot of extras for quite awhile! :)

My Rainbow Resource wish list is currently at $700...of course I can't get all of that! Lol.  I guess I look at curriculum too much, but anything to keep me from reading the news when I'm decompressing from the day!

I love that Rainbow Resource allows you to keep a wish list!  I have quite the list of activities and preschool toys in that list.

I hope you are blessed to get a few specials off of your list this year!

This is so exciting for your daughter!  Your daughter will truly appreciate you doing this for her!

I look but didn’t reply as I don’t purchase curriculum in Jan/Feb as we pay the 2nd installment of property tax in January every year.

I tend to buy the bulk in June as my boys would choose their next academic year classes in late May. So after they pick their outsourced classes then we buy the necessary materials.

I do have speech and debate 1 week summer camp as priority because that is an area (skill set) which my boys lack.

I have nothing exciting/new planned for next year, but I am hoping to shave about 40% off my total before September.  I'll be visiting a curriculum resale shop in March and May to bring in my old stuff and grab some deals on some new, and then I'll watch for sales for some of the rest.

We are considering sending the will-be-8yo to summer camp.  It's an overnighter down the street from us.  He's a little nervous to be around other kids that long, but is willing to think it over.

  • 2 weeks later...

We typically purchase mid-late Spring because we only come Stateside once a year, so I am already deep in the throes of planning.

My big victory so far is finding Michael Clay Thompson's Island Level for about 30% off the website price! I almost never see MCT for sale so I was very pleasantly surprised. I also managed to get ahold of Singapore 3A/B + 4A/B (TMs & HIGs) for 70% off.

All that's left now is a PDF copy of History Odyssey, Intensive Practice boooks for Singapore 3A/B, & various supplies via Amazon.

The school year starts end of January here in Australia, so I have been buying lots Dec - Jan.

I am not even going to add up how much I have spent. I do have some funding for twins that I have used for some "extras" that I never had for bio kids, including notebooking pages and knight math manipulatives

It makes more sense to me to plan from January to December, but here it is an August or July.

Christianbooks.com till tomorrow is having a sale on AOPS math curriculum.

I got Horizon Math K workbook one for $19.96. No shipping or sales tax.

So I decided to get the second workbook also.

I didn't buy the teacher's guide.

We're waiting for income tax time to buy, but yeah. Dd(5) is close to finishing AAR1 so level 2's a must and I figure it'd be better to get what we need now instead of waiting til the last minute. I've had most of her 1st grade curriculum picked out for years, so I doubt I'm gonna change my mind anytime soon. Just gotta figure out our writing plan.

Lol! My wishlists are similar, I have to automatically double the cost though for Australian Dollar and international shipping :(

I did my shopping in october/November, though I still have a few books to pick up along the way. We start back next week!

The downside is you get Christmas then holidays and then school start up costs without time to recover. It is brutal when you are a low income working parent with kids in B&M schools.

I just meant mentally it makes for sense, but I can totally see the financial strain- I hadn't even thought of that.  I know around here- kids can get free backpacks/supplies/shoes at the beginning of the school year, but I am sure many areas don't offer that.  The vast majority of kids in my area are on free lunch (if my kids went to school we would be as well) so I understand it being hard to afford things.   We usually pay for household supplies, school supplies/curriculum, and bulk food with our tax refund so we usually start our new "Curriculum" in the beginning of March, so starting Jan 1st usually isn't the case here either.  I was able to start my "little middles" earlier this year as we had a enough funds to purchase the few things that I needed- I owned most of it, but my oldest is still switching in March this year.

Schools in Australia do not provide lunch

What she said is code for "poor" and not really any actual comment on food serving. It basically says that where she lives is an area that has families struggling economically where quite a few will be struggling to make ends meet all year long.

We do have some schools in NZ where charities give out things like breakfast, shoes, raincoats. They may even supply books in some places. But that is about the bottom 5% of schools and most low income people have kids in different schools - and I know higher income people who attend poor schools and get given stuff because that is where they can buy a house. We are not talking slums just poorer. We do not have lunchrooms etc in NZ. You can borrow the money from the government for school stuff but you pay it back weekly so it is better to avoid it. Any tax bills must be paid by 7th Feb but if you get a refund (I seem to get more bills usually) it will not come through until may. If you are homeschooling you do get a payment in Dec and May though (about $375 to child one, $275 for child 2, $175 for child 3). I got a partial payment so I got some stuff then.

NZ kids typically get less help via school than the US BUT they get a lot more help directly from the government - we run a centralised system. Except for rates (tax on properties paid to councils for local services - about 1% of property value a year give or take) all taxes are paid to cental government who then run all services. Schools, prisons, medical car, national roaring, armed forces, social welfare etc are all paid out of this money.
