MamaBearTeacher
Why am I seeing this everywhere this year? I never saw it before. I feel like there is a movie or something that I missed.
gardenmom5
 where are you seeing it? is it people who don't read, so they don't know how it is spelled? (a far too common occurrence.) halloween started as "all hallows eve" - and eventually morphed. when I was a child, I would see the full version, but usually it was "hallowe'en."
Jean in Newcastle
Gwen Stefani has a song "Hollaback girl". She also has a Christmas special. It's a play on words.
hjffkj
My kid made a decoration for our front door that says Holla Days. I asked if he knew he spelled it wrong. He said yes, he spelled it like they do in the Trolls Holiday special.

Selkie
What is "Hollaback"? I've always thought the song is about someone who has been insulting Gwen behind her back and she is saying she's not going to hollaback, or respond with insults - she's going to meet this person by the bleachers and beat him/her up. I'm probably way off, though! :)

Jean in Newcastle
Holla is urban slang. It is used in different songs and movies as well as in certain settings. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
rose
I would have guessed that it was like xmas. Maybe it's a way of removing "holy" from holiday to make Christmas more secular.

SparklyUnicorn
I haven't seen it. The Gwen Stafani song also popped into my head when I read the title...

Maybe it's a way of removing "holy" from holiday to make Christmas more secular.Christ has been signified by an X symbol since at least the 16th century. X is the from the Greek Chi which is the first letter in Christ. It is not some part of a conspiracy. The use of holla is a simple word play. Again, no conspiracy. Not sure if I understand you. Are you saying that xmas is about removing the religious part of the holiday? Because it isn't. The letter 'X' is the first letter of the Greek (from the New Testament) word for Christ.

"The Holla Day for You" is a song in a new TV special from Dreamworks called Trolls Holiday. It's just a pun from a cute animated movie, not an anti-Christian conspiracy.

I do know this but I think that some people use the x as a way of removing Christ from Christmas, not in a conspiracy sort of way though. I actually don't celebrate Christmas so it really doesn't bother me one way or another. I'm not one of those people. :D
KungFuPanda
A hollaback girl is all all talk and no action. It means you’ll take the altercation no further than trading insults. Gwen Stafani ain’t no hollaback girl because she WILL throw down. Holla is slang for holler/yell. A holla is like a greeting that’s often imperative. I haven’t seen any holla Days ornaments, but I’d guess a celebratory connotation; make a joyful noise, if you will. Kung Fu Panda on the boards! Holla! 🼠
KarenNC
The things I learn on this forum... Me, too. To the extent that I ever wondered about the word in the Gwen Stefani song, I heard it as "hollow back" and assumed it was probably some sexual reference that I just didn't understand and wasn't curious enough to research. I'm rather well known for mishearing lyrics, though.
lexi
I was thinking it’s like when people write “wahlaâ€. It’s “voila†people! Argh! But I guess this one is legitimate. But my first thought was that it was written by people who can’t read or spell well!

Jean in Newcastle
Reading Jean explain what a Hollaback girl is has to be one of the highlights of the year for me on this forum. :) I think that some others did it better. I especially liked Panda's explanation. (Holla back, Girl!) And I missed the Trolls Holiday reference. I did see the trailer but didn't really pay attention even to that.

That's basically how it's used in the Trolls song (sung/rapped by Justin Timberlake and various others); it starts out "Holla Holla Holla, the Holla Day for you!"
