Invented Spelling

Recommended Posts

I have to say, I love it!

My DD5 has started writing, and it is fantastic. Her older sister skipped this entirely. (I think it's a perfectionist thing, "I'm going to write this correctly, or I'm not going to write it all.") Whereas my second really expresses her creativity in drawing and now writing.

The first one I noticed was a drawing with the title binsowr (dinosaur), and today she started a letter to me with DEIR MOME (Dear Mommy). It's just so sweet and cute.

That's all.

Aww, very sweet. The letter reversals really add an adorable touch, don't they?

As I say to my perfectionist oldest, who is always correcting her younger siblings, there is a time for academic perfection and there is a time for warm happy memories of a fleeting time in a child's life. (Yes, I am one of those horrible moms who was like, "Hmm, how long can we delay speech therapy, because the way my preschooler talks is absolutely precious and I like it!")

We STILL have a running family joke from that time in my life. I left a note on my parents' bed saying,"Ples fix me sumthing good to eat so I will not storf to deth". Every time I say I'm hungry, my parents ask if I'm 'storfing'.

My DS does this too, completely unprompted, only he will tape them to our bedroom door like Martin Luther's manifesto.

Yes! Stop trying to ruin my joy in invented spelling!

This thread is so encouraging to a mom whose daughter still invents spelling of words at 8 years old! She is a pretty good speller, but she gets lazy when she is making cards or signs or things from her art table after school. Some of the spellings are just so sweet and cute and lovable that I can't bring myself to correct it. There will become a time, sooner than I care to admit, that she is going to be "too old" to make cute signs and cards for me so I prefer to enjoy it!
