Does this type of subscription box exist for children?

I would hardly call myself a quilter. I have only made 4 tops and quilted 3 (lots of learning still to do) however in the quilting world there is something called a "block of the month". In this you get a bit of fabric every month and after about a year (sometimes less, rarely more) you have a finished quilt top. Now you still need to do the work of it (that is the fun) and you still need to get a backing and the batting but you get the idea.

I would love to get something for my son (9) that doesn't just add to the clutter in my house. 3-4 kids (we foster), 3 bedroom house, a dog and 4 hermit crabs and no I don't live in 2000+ square feet! I would love to find something that he can have fun with every month and would build upon each other to the point that on the other end he has something useful.

I have no idea what I want him to make but has anyone seen anything like this?

A few suggestions:

Bitsbox - coding projects each month.  There are different subscriptions for them, ranging from mail to email.

Raddish - you get recipe cards and kitchen tools.

Cratejoy.com has a lot of box subscriptions all in one place.  I search there when I'm looking for something particular.

I looked at Raddish but it seemed a bit too baby-ish to me. My 9 year would blow away in a stiff breeze but he is tall and can use normal size tools in the kitchen. I saw that they had something for older children, but I wasn't sure how it was different.

I did think about getting something like a meal delivery subscription that he could make. Terra's Kitchen looked good because then he could have all the fun of cooking but without the prep. However I think that is weekly and not monthly. Also we would eat his creations and so is that a gift for him?

There is also eeme.co for electronics. My 8yo dd got the initial box a week ago and essentially did the project herself in two sittings watching the short, step-by-step instructions. My impression is that the projects build on each other - although probably not in the beautiful, all one integrated whole that a quilt is!

What are his interests?

Take a look at a site like subcriptionaddiction.com and you will see tons of various boxes. There are a few food/snack boxes, which would let him eat up his gift each month, lol.

I couldn't quite face the idea of paying sooo much for what is generally quite basic items at retail prices, so I'm doing my own "mom-curated" boxes for my young adult kids (17 & 19).

Youngest is getting an art box; most months will have a theme like markers, acrylics, whatever, so she can compare different brands. A couple of months will just be something cool to try, and at least one will be a field trip to the art store to pick whatever she wants.

Oldest is getting a planner-type box, so it might have washi tape, cool pens, inspirational quote, post-it notes, and so on.

Art and planning, yeah my kids are nothing alike

They are both getting the following:

Tiny Treasures style box, which is exactly what it sounds like: tiny little cute items.

Quirky box, which is just fun, odd, random things. Oldest has one month that is a sloth theme, youngest has one month that is a shark theme, both will have a superhero month, and so on. I might also do a quick activity or project with everything included. When my imagination fails, they will get fun food, lol.

I definitely wouldn't keep up with organizing this every single month, so I am buying much of the stuff ahead of time, with my normal Christmas shopping. Then, when I fall behind, I just grab a box I already have done. I am close to done already on art, tiny treasures, and planning.

Oldest will have hers delivered at college. I refuse to mail youngest's to ourselves, so I will do stuff like having it waiting on the table when she wakes up or when she arrives home, all boxed up with a Special Delivery notice.

If you do a home-made food/snack box, World Market is a fabulous place to find stuff. Oh, one more idea that works with World Market! I once gave all my nieces/nephews a themed gift that related to a specific country, so one kid was Germany, one was France, and so on. You could do a different country each month, and you have a lot of leeway on what to include: food and books of course, I did a teacup and chopsticks for Japan, you could do Day of the Dead stuff for Mexico.

You could also do an experience subscription, one experience per month: trip to the ice cream store, bowling, lunch out, whatever he would like. Over and done, no clutter. I've done coupons for this, and my kids always loved it.
