Looking at satellite imagery today you can clearly see smoke spiraling from the fires just north of Los Angeles and spilling out into the Pacific Ocean. High pressure situated over the California/Nevada border is to blame for sending the smoke north. Winds around high pressure flow in a clockwise fashion and those winds are not only sending smoke into the Bay Area, but are also responsible for the strong winds in Southern California that continue to spread the wildfires.†http://abc7news.com/weather/smoke-from-socal-fires-causes-haze-in-bay-area/2753472/
Arcadia
Thomas Fire is still raging :( “At 230,000 acres, Thomas fire is now the fifth-largest wildfire in modern California history Santa Barbara County was under siege from the Thomas fire Sunday as fire crews fought to keep the destructive blaze from the region’s picturesque beach communities. Authorities said the out-of-control blaze had scorched 230,000 acres by Sunday evening, making it the fifth largest wildfire in modern California history. The fire grew by more than 50,000 acres during the day, triggering new evacuation orders for about 5,000 county residents, including those east of Mission Canyon and north of Highway 192. An additional 30,000 residents west of Mission Canyon to Highway 154 and south of Highway 192 to the county line were told to prepare to leave. As the fire grew Sunday, containment dropped from 15% to 10%, authorities said. ... Meanwhile, UC Santa Barbara Chancellor Henry T. Yang announced that the university has postponed final exams until next year. Power outages and air quality issues, along with the confusion over an emergency alert that buzzed cellphones countywide around 2 a.m. “have only continued to raise the level of anxiety at an already stressful time,†Yang wrote in a letter to the campus. “Continuation of scheduled exams has become untenable.â€â€œ http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-thomas-fire-santa-barbara-fire-20171210-story.html

Arcadia
Thomas Fire has now become the 3rd largest state fire since accurate recording began in 1932. The firefighters are facing an uphill task this weekend. Full containment is not expected until January. “The Thomas fire is now the third largest fire in California’s history since accurate recording began in 1932. The wildfire, which started in Ventura County on Dec. 4, has scorched 267,500 acres and killed two people, including a firefighter. It has also destroyed more than 1,000 structures and damaged hundreds more. A portion of the northbound 101 Freeway into Santa Barbara was closed to traffic Saturday as evacuation orders were expanded in areas in and around Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. About 1,600 Santa Barbara County residents are under mandatory evacuation orders, while 34,000 residents in the fire zone remain under voluntary evacuation. ... Wind gusts of up to 65 mph blasted south down the San Ysidro Creek drainage directly into Montecito. ‘Unfortunately they under-predicted this one,†Zaniboni said. “We weren’t expecting this severe of a wind event and we’re certainly getting the worst...This fire is two weeks old and here we are battling it like it just started again this morning.†... The fire is so large that its eastern and western fronts are influenced by entirely different wind patterns and terrain. In many ways, it’s as if firefighters are battling two separate fires some 40 miles apart.“ http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-thomas-fire-ledeall-20171216-story.html

Arcadia
The really bad thing is that they haven't had the fall rains that we have had up here in NorCal. So all the vegetation is tinder. Many areas in NorCal are under Red Flag warning until tomorrow morning. http://www.weather.gov/fire/ “Fire officials are asking people not to set campfires or even engage in permitted brush burning this weekend. “You should never start a fire when winds are above 10 miles per hour,†said Cal Fire and Napa County Fire Capt. Chase Beckman. The Santa Rosa Fire Department has put summertime wildfire equipment back on all engines and trucks in preparation for the weekend winds, said Assistant Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal. The fire department also has suspended all nonemergency activities that would take equipment out of service for the weekend. For Lowenthal, the lack of rain this autumn has both helped and hurt conditions in Sonoma County. The absence of heavy rains allayed concerns of erosion and landslides in fire-ravaged areas while also giving hillsides a chance to stabilize. At the same time, trees and brush haven’t received rain needed to reduce the risk of fire.†http://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/7768698-181/dry-gusty-winds-expected-for

The Thomas fire was 50% contained, and fire officials do not anticipate full containment until Jan. 8, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. .., Forecasters predict a new blast of Santa Barbara’s notorious sundowner winds, which blow down the canyons to the coast, late Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
