Withdrawing from ps to homeschool midyear

Recommended Posts

So, WWYD?

We are thinking about withdrawing my 10th grade son from three of his six classes at the public high school.  Our choice is to withdraw him now, with Ws or withdraw him at the end of the semester with grades.

The classes are French II, English, and world history.  The classes he will remain in are AP Calc BC, AP Econ (both macro and micro), and chemistry.

He doesn't need the credits as he has high school credits from the two years that we homeschooled between 8th and 9th grade (he skipped two grades at a private middle school).

He would replace the French with college German course.  We would do a writing-intensive English class at home using college level materials, and history would be replaced with an interest-led interdisciplinary course using college level materials (he has already had high school American and world history at home).

If I had to predict what grades he would get in the courses at the end of the first semester, I would say an A in history, a B+ in English, and a C in French.  His GPA is currently a 3.87 without homeschool courses and 3.94 with them.

Anyway, would you pull him to homeschool now and have three Ws on the ps transcript or wait until the end of the semester?

When is the end of the semester? A "W" will catch an admission officer's eye.

It is at the end of January.

So, do you think that three Ws would really look that much different than having no second halves to three of the courses?

Why do you want to drop those classes?

As a pp said, if it were a safety issue or a bullying issue, I would pull him out of the school now.  Otherwise, I would wait till the end of the semester to avoid having W's on the transcript, especially for the course he has an A in. I definitely wouldn't throw that one away.

If I were worried about a 0.5 credit B+ and an 0.5 credit C having too much of an impact on his overall GPA, I'd get tutoring asap to try to bring up those grades. If the semester runs through the end of January, he has time. Personally, I don't think I'd be too worried about a 0.5 B+, though.

If he's bored and not learning as much as he could be, I'd wait till the end of the semester. He can always do more at home or spend any extra time on other interests.

If you pull him  now, I DO think you will have to explain why the withdrawals are on the transcript. There can be lots of good reasons to withdraw now, but I think it will be noticed and need to be explained.

Another big consideration anytime someone is withdrawn in high school is what the plan is for the rest of high school. If you plan on finishing out by homeschooling then you are good. If you think that your student might ever return to school, ask the questions before withdrawing about how to get back into school. Some districts will not accept homeschool credits and that makes it very difficult.

Also, if you ever do return to public school, they may not give any credit for the “Wâ€. We moved in April 2 1/2 years ago and pulled my ds from public school. He is full special education with credits that basically meant nothing, but the new school almost didn’t want to “graduate†him based on his not completing his month of his courses. I’d imagine the stakes are higher for a typical learner. Eventually, they did give him credit for the courses only because I told them he wasn’t coming back anyway.
