Derek Owens Precalculus to Community College Calc 1?

DS is a junior and currently doing Derek Owen’s Precalculus.

 

Will this be adequate preparation for Calculus 1 and 2 at the community college senior year?

 

Also, he still doesn’t know what he wants to pursue in college. If he decides to go into something like engineering, would it be better to save Calculus 1 and 2 for college and do Calculus at home next year in preparation for those courses?

Completely adequate prep as long as he retains it. 

 

It depends on the rigor of your community college AND the 4-year university. Some are more rigorous than others, and some curricula are better aligned than others. Ask the math department how students do after they transfer, and try and get info out of the 4-yr as well, before you make your decision. If the CC course is not well aligned or not rigorous enough, you're completely correct that it would be much better to do calculus at home and then retake it at the 4-year.

In some (all??) places you can DE at the 4-year university as well. Whether it matters depends. My Calc 1 & 2 prof taught the exact same courses at the 4-year university and at the local CC - same prof, same book, same everything, just different cost.
