We are done!

20 days. 4 hours per day.  The essays for university applications are finally done.  80 hours for 6 schools.  I'm exhausted, he's exhausted.  But we are done!  And the British Math Olympiad round 1 is tomorrow, then ds goes to Mexico with his grandfather to visit the Maya ruins, then it is summer!!!!

I wanted to discuss the profound impact that this process has had on ds.  These essays took 80 hours because once he finished all of them, he had learned so much about himself that he needed to rewrite them all.  It has been a iterative process with profound results.  In 2 months he has gone from vaguely goal oriented to knowing clearly what he wants to do and how he wants to achieve it.  I never in a 1000 years thought that these essays would get him to this place.  I now feel so much more comfortable with sending him around the world for university -- he has grown into a man through this process.

Now, we wait.  2 of the 6 are early decision, so we will know very soon if we have over shot the mark. gulp.

And he's a super nice kid, too, which, in my book, is even better. All the intellect in the world is great, but when it's coupled with kindness, well, that makes a world changer. Good job, mama.

But tell him to be careful with the machete; those things are sharp!!

I could have written the same thing. I've been thinking about starting a thread about college applications as a rite of passage or something. It has had a profound impact on my ds. He went from being completely not self reflective to having a much better sense of who he is and a self confidence that this is his future. It's hard to explain--almost like he was drifting before and now he realizes he needs to take the reigns. He has interests and talents and he is growing up not just aging. I am blown away.

Of course yesterday he said he really enjoyed reading Augustine's City of God to discuss in his honors interview and that blew me away, too.

Then there's the fact the honors program is exactly what I wanted his high school years to look like--but he wasn't interested then. I guess he's ready now.

What a crazy few months it has been--but far more rewarding then I jmagibed!

All the best for your ds.

Thanks!  He loves working with your dd!  But remind her, not today, as he has the BMO1 starting in 1.5 hours. And not next week either as he will be with his grandfather.

After the exam, he has 24 hours to pack.  We may be running to the store as I don't even know if his summer clothes fit anymore.

I thought so (on early action vs early decision) because they are so confusing even to those of us in the States! I thought I'd ask for clarification, though, since it wasn't clear.

Arrrg.  I always get those words mixed up. They are not binding, and one is public and one is private.  So it was all ok.

... And remember that schools can pick up a kid after early action during the regular decision time even if they don't pick them during EA. Something that is easy to feel during college decision time is that your kid and your decisions in homeschooling are being judged. Whether a certain college admits him or not doesn't change what a great kid he is, what a wonderful job you've done raising him, or any of his myriad of accomplishments.

Come back to the fact that just the PROCESS has been amazing for him. Ultimately, he'll be fine no matter where he attends.
