Love/Hate with Right Start

Slight vent. I love the hands-on-ness of Right Start Math, I do. But I bought SO many manipulatives they said I needed. WHY must I then print out 37 hundreds squares out of the appendix. I swear every other lesson has me copying pages out of the appendix and cutting shapes out, etc. It makes it not feel open-and-go and is irritating to me. At this point with 4 kids and a baby, I need open and go. Vent over. But also - might there be a curriculum that truly is open and go but with the same hands-on visual approach?

 

Or perhaps as we progress there won’t be as much of the printing and cutting needed before we can begin? We are in Level B.

I haven’t used the appendix at all for level C and we we almost done. However, we often skip stuff that is annoying with manipulatives. Actually I just looked in the back and the appendix is pretty much empty.

We skipped some of that, like the insane triangle thing.  I also didn't use many of the memory card ones.  I think just the tally sticks and the circles ones.  

 

Here's my opinion.  Teach RS B once.  For all the rest of your kids, use Singapore Math, but teach it "the right start way".  RS does a great job of teaching a new teacher how to do lower level math.

I haven't used the appendix for D.  There are tools there, but we haven't needed them.

I’m glad to see some have skipped those parts. My kids really do resonate with this method of learning but sometimes I struggle to enjoy it for these reasons!!

Oh yeah, the Cotter ' s triangle was crazy but my 6 year old wanted to do it so I printed everything and handed it over. He cut it all out and built it just out of sheer determination since I said I wanted to skip it since he had such a strong grasp of the concept. He spent one whole weekend doing it. He was so proud :)

I'm using levels C,D, and F. I haven't had to do any cutting or photocopying so far. I often skip assignments that seem too time consuming, in all our subjects. I don't think missing a few lessons in a book will set them behind for life. ;)

They used to sell a set with all that stuff already printed. You'd still need to cut, but it wasn't that bad a price considering the amount of printing. 

 

It won't make you feel any better, but now I have a ds with more SN and I spend HOURS printing his stuff.  :lol:
