TravelingChris
I am trying to order a turkey. Dh says, not a huge one but big enough for sandwiches, another dinner we will make with it (for potentially more people) and of course, regular Thanksgiving dinner. There will be five of us. Normal charts say one pound per person. We have never bought that small since our largest Thanksgivings have been six people but there are no six lb. turkeys. I think I normally order somewhere between 12 and 14 with no waste. But what do you all say- how much to order?
EKS
I've been getting turkeys that are about 15 pounds for six of us (all adult sized appetites). There is definitely enough for leftovers but not too much.
TravelingChris
Yes, I decided for 14 but it wasn't available today. They said more coming tomorrow.
Alessandra
I'd go for 14-16 lb at least if all the people are teens/adults. Closer to 16, imo. Better to have a little extra turkey for soup or curry than not have enough for sandwiches. I find that 14-16 lbs works for 3-4 people for the main meal and a weekend of leftovers.
TravelingChris
Yes I couldn't order so I got a 16.35 lb. one.
umsami
We usually get a 14 lb for the 6 of us. We could go slightly bigger as we're out of leftovers within a day or two.
Seasider
I go ahead and get an 18-20 pounder. Twenty is the max that will fit in my roasting oan and I like to make a big pot of turkey & sausage gumbo with the leftover meat. And maybe a few sandwiches.

Some tiny kid appetites and no huge eaters in the bunch. I expect turkey enough for dinner and some leftovers to divvy up and send home with the other family. We should get another meal or two out of them each plus stock from bones. I plan to freeze turkey pie filling if there’s any meat left by the weekend. My crew isn’t big on leftovers.
