Minecraft on ios & dealing with xbox requirement

Recommended Posts

Okay, I realize that calling Minecraft "General Education" is stretching the definition of education, but the Chat Board scares me ;)  so I'm hoping y'all will bear with me ...

Minecraft, which is the main game my children play on their iPads (they play "together" in a multiplayer mode) has changed so that xbox accounts are required in order to have access to the servers that enable multiplayer mode.  We do not have xbox, and are very hesitant to enroll the children in social media/social gaming, AND are having a heck of a time setting up child accounts for xbox on our Macs.

aside: I am so.angry. at Microsoft for making Minecraft this difficult to use and for requiring accounts that force juvenile Minecraft players to join a social platform if they want to play with a friend.  I am happy to pay for server use, but xbox accounts are a whole 'nother level of online social exposure, even with parental controls ...

main point: anyone worked around this on ios (they use iPads)?  I think we may have to set up a server locally and keep it running while they play -- dh thinks he can do it on one of our computers, and I gather some folks have done it on Raspberry Pi.   Am grateful for thoughts.

thanks!

Ds says they play on LAN worlds. He says it’s limited to five players and something about being close to each other. You have to go into multiplayer settings, enable LAN worlds, and then I got lost. I’ll see if I can find directions online.

Microsoft talks about it here - https://blogs.windows.com/devices/2015/09/18/how-to-play-multiplayer-minecraft-pocket-edition/

Looks like they all have to be on the same WiFi connection per the link above. Ds and dd said you don’t have to set-up an account on Pocket iOS to play that way. They said a number of other things, but um...I’m not super Minecraft literate. :p

Otherwise, yes, we all here are annoyed with the update that required the xbox thing.

Oh, and then there are realms, I guess. Ds said it costs money so we don't have it, but they’ve thought about it. He hasn’t looked into it closely, but it looks like it requires an xbox live account - https://www.cnet.com/how-to/6-things-you-should-know-about-minecraft-realms-for-ios-android/ - which he wasn’t thrilled about when I mentioned it.

They’re also very suspicious of me and all my questions now, but dh assured them it was homeschoolers on the internet which seemed to satisfy them.

My kids play Minecraft with each other on their iPads using our home WiFi router. We ban them from playing with strangers when we saw not good stuff on the chat in Minecraft. Previously there was no chat in the pocket edition so we didn’t have that rule.

Thank you so much!

We can't find a toggle for local server in settings (using the link above for this: it does look like just what we need).  The settings options we have available are:

(controls)

Keyboard & Mouse

Controller

Touch

(general)

Profile -- this is where I expected the toggle, it is just: Sign in to Xbox Life for Free!; use cellular data; require encrypted websockets; Attribution; Licensed Content

Video

Audio

Global Resources

Storage

Language

I so very much appreciate y'all's help.  And so do my boys!

ETA: the local server workaround bombed here.  DH set it up, and it would only do Minecraft stuff via xbox (I don't know specifics of this, he is all things tech to me now.  It is amazing how technically challenged I've become since homeschooling -- I used to have to set up computers &c regularly but now it is all Latin, math, grammar, laundry & food!)
