Edible advent calendars

I have two Playmobil advent calendars. My two kids at home are 19 and 21. Every year for the past several years they say don't bother to put them out because they've outgrown them. So I tell them Phbbbt! I haven't outgrown them. I put them out and plan on opening the boxes each day because it brings me joy and memories. SO..... they always beat me to it. Each chooses a calendar and that is the set they each work on. Haha! Definitely not too old then.

 

But, I must admit they're getting old. We need fun stuff. I was thinking of something to eat like chocolates. Suggestions? I don't want it too expensive because I was going to get one for each of us. That's 4 sets if I include DH and if it's chocolate, I should include him.

Don't know if you have Aldi, but they have some.  I splurged on the deluxe chocolate ones for kids/dh (not for me..I don't like chocolate much).

You're nicer than me. My girls got the $1.29 ones. This will be the second year we've done them. They get so much joy out of that cheap chocolate.

We really love the Trader Joes chocolate advent calendars.  
A tiny piece of chocolate.  

 

The first year, I bought one for DD.

The second year, I bought one for DD and one the nearest adult when she opened hers.  
The third, I did as above plus bought a bunch to hand out to her friends.  

 

At $0.99, you can't beat it.

Basically she takes 25 hershey kisses (we'd advanced to fancier candy) use colored saran wrap and lay a long sheet out, put the candy on it in a line, roll & tie it up in 25 sections and hang.  My kids have been doing it for YEARS and it's their favorite thing to do.  They are 16, 18 & almost 20.  I need to get candy soon for it.  I'll try and post some photos.

I've never seen them at Walmart or Target (doesn't mean they're not there, but I've never seen them.)

 

The ones at Aldi go FAST.

 

Here's a catalog with a bunch of them and the prices aren't horrible--scroll down a bit for the ones that are $5.06 a calendar. Before I found them at Aldi, I used to get them from this catalog.

I just saw chocolate advent calendars at a couple local grocery stores that are part of the Kroger chain. 

 

They were under $2.

I’ve seen people use over-the-door shoe holders to make one for the entire family. A friend was mining for ideas for loading it. Being helpful we made suggestions like “pledge†and “stiffer†and “ingredients and recipes†and “just bust up a puzzle and put the pieces in the pockets.†We’re good friends like that 😬

I saw some at Michael's but I bought a wooden one with little doors at JCP a couple years ago. One or two door knobs came off or get stuck :/ I used Andes mints or something small. I'm thinking maybe Hershey's kisses like different kinds.

We had one of these for years- kisses worked great in it, big enough for all of us. Too many knobs fell off when we moved so I sold it in a garage sale, but I may keep an eye out for a different style. Ours came from Xmas Tree Shops 🌲

I definitely don't want a reusable one. That's just storing one more thing in my attic during the year. I have lots of Christmas stuff up there that we haven't gotten down in, gosh maybe 5 years, because no one in my house cares about decorating. I'm positive they'd all be fine if I didn't even put up a Christmas tree. I do the tree for me and hang stockings for all of us. That's the extent of my decorating. I thought the edible advent calendars would be nice and festive. I'd sit them on my piano out of the reach of the dog.

 

My youngest dd is coming home this week for Thanksgiving. I'm going to get her to help me choose what to do. She won't be home for Christmas until Dec. 14th so she'll have 14 days of candy to eat in one go. :)
