maize
I know a couple of posters have been waiting for a 23and Me sale. Their ancestry service is $49 this week. https://refer.23andme.com/s/Sjkris?share_id=6489174327400835359
maize
Looks like you do have to purchase 2 kits to get the sale price.
PeterPan
I did the Genes for Good surveys and finally got the kit. It's free, but the return time they said would be up to 14 weeks. :glare: Guess that's what you get for free.
frugalmamatx
FYI - CVS will have the basic ones for $30 on THanksgiving, with $20 back in extra care bucks {usable on almost anything in store}. Much better deal IMO. I did the genes for good ones as well but debating picking up a kit at CVS anyways.

I was *assuming* the G4G would have EVERYTHING, like all the health stuff, everything. I want more than just ancestry. Are you just wanting your results back faster? Or you're curious if the results will differ?

So I'm guessing it'll be a while. I was curious to see how they compared actually. And I'll be at CVS anyways and have extra extra care bucks so might as well right? PeterPan
We have places in line with G4G?? LOL I'll have to go look. Does it update on the app thing? That's kind of disheartening... Yeah, looking around there. I can't find the spot. If you know where to find it, I'd be interested! Yeah, looking around there. I can't find the spot. If you know where to find it, I'd be interested! https://apps.facebook.com/genesforgood Go there, and it should be in the "your progress" box. Mine says "Your kit is #9,295 out of 9,899 currently waiting to be genotyped. It was sent to the lab on October 25, 2017. The genotyping and quality control process can take several months. Thank you for your patience! We release a new batch of results every several weeks; these numbers do not change every day."

You know what, I think it might be because my thing says that they're validating the sample. So maybe once they validate the sample, THEN they'll put mine in line to be run? With 23and Me you get all the same data whether you do the ancestry or health kit, you just don't get their health analysis unless you pay for it. You can run your raw data through third party analysis services for the health information.
maize
It's in store only. But the link to the ad is here: https://www.bfads.net/stores/cvs/ads/black-friday/page-4OK, based on that ad I think this is a new pricing scheme I have seen elsewhere where the collection kit is sold for $29.99 BUT you have to pay another $69 on top of that for the service. If that is true it is not a good deal. Edited November 17, 2017 by maize
maize
You can see the kit in this image, where step one is "buy kit" and step 2 is "pay lab fee" https://www.walgreens.com/store/c/23andme-personal-genetic-service-saliva-collection-kit/ID=prod6331361-product?ext=gooPLA_-_Sexual_Wellness&pla&adtype=pla&kpid=sku6277167&sst=1a2c0076-8800-467c-ad16-4f6023f72658&reactjs=true Edited November 17, 2017 by maize

maize
IS this stuff for real? I thought I heard some place that the information wasn't true? Not sure which information you are talking about. They do actually analyze your DNA, they definitely are not faking that. It is a SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) analysis, which means they are not sequencing entire chromosomes but rather spot checking certain DNA bases that commonly vary between people. They analyze thousands of these bases. From that data there are a few different things that can be pulled out, with varying levels of certainty. The heritage analysis--where they suggest ancestral origins--is not entirely accurate, largely because populations near each other (say, different countries but all in Europe) share A LOT of DNA. So they may know that a particular profile is more common in France than Britain but it still exists in Britain. It's more accurate on the continent level--so if it tells you you have European, or African, or Native American ancestry you can be quite confident that you do. The rest is more "you have a high probability of having x ancestry" it can't tell you for certain. Health data can tell you that certain SNP's are associated with certain genetic conditions. Again, they aren't sequencing the entire genome, so you don't get complete information. Also, research on the interplay between genes and disease is a rapidly evolving field and things mostly are not cut and dried. To me the genealogy aspect is the most interesting, and here it is highly accurate going back several generations. It is possible to compare your DNA with that of other people and find out if you are related, which other relatives you have in common, etc. I've been working to break through a couple of genealogy brick walls using this data.

Much better deal IMO. I did the genes for good ones as well but debating picking up a kit at CVS anyways. Don't know if you saw my post above but I did go to the CVS site and have verified: the kits they are selling for $29.99 require a $69 lab fee to process. If you buy the kit directly from 23andMe on sale the processing fee is included, which makes that the better deal. I've seen the $49 for the kit + ancestry service before on Amazon during their Prime Day sale, so if you don't buy this time or don't want or need two kits it may be available again at that price. I would not recommend doing the CVS deal as it isn't really a sale except for the $20 care bucks. This is from CVS: Details 23andMe Personal Genetic Service - Saliva Collection Kit1 EA, .38 lbs. Item# 168385 23andMe is a personalized genetic service that helps you understand what your 23 pairs of chromosomes - your DNA - can tell you about you, your family, your ancestry, your traits and much more. Choose from one of our two services - the Ancestry Service or the Health + Ancestry Service. Purchase and receive your saliva collection kit from CVS.com, then go online to 23andMe.com/start to choose which service you would like to receive and pay the additional lab fee - choose either the Ancestry Service for $69 or the Health + Ancestry Service for $169. Mail your saliva sample to the lab in the pre-paid package and once your sample has been analyzed, receive your personalized genetic reports in a secure online account. 23andMe's Health +Ancestry Service is the first and only genetic service available directly to you that includes reports that meet FDA standards. kroe1
Somebody convince me why spreading one’s DNA onto the Internet, or at least, someone else’s computer database is a good thing. Sure, I am curious about what my results would be. But, the fear of the ultimate theft identity is too much.

They take the data and run it through separate engines.
