My ds did. It is from dh's employer and it fairly large and renewable for 5 years. We were very fortunate.

Dh works for a big company- over 10,000 employees but I guess when it is narrowed down by how many employees have dependents graduating and attending college in that single calendar year it made a pool of applicants ds could stand out in. It was still a long shot and we were quite surprised to get it. Dh knew of several co-workers who had children apply and did not get it.

I think when it comes to outside scholarships the ones to really look for are the ones that have your applicant pool narrowed significantly from ones that are open to the general population. I would start searching by religious group, employer, etc. I know some medical conditions have scholarships associated with them.

Actually, the company dh used to work for also opened their scholarship awards up to grandchildren of employees. My second ds waits tables for a chain restaurant that offers scholarships to employees. Definitely check out and employment based scholarships your dc might be eligible for.

My daughter received the $2500 National Merit Scholarship her first year, plus $1500 from the national organization for my husband's branch of service. For her second year of college, she got $1500 (maybe $2000, can't recall precisely) from the local telephone company and $750 from my husband's organization. She applied to many, many outside scholarships her first year, mostly without success. Now we realize that it does not provide much benefit for her to receive more than about $3000/year in outside scholarships anyway because of the way her financial aid is calculated.

The way the poll is set up, it's not possible to vote "no" without also choosing a scholarship amount, so that may skew the results if people who did not get scholarships have to check the "$500 & under" amount in order to submit.

Thanks for letting me know, hopefully the edited version is better hard to tell how to fix that.  Let me know if I didn't fix it.  Thanks!

My dd#1 won a state wide art contest (where the art went onto calendars made by a Big City bank) several years back. (This is really humorous since she's not art-y and dd#2 lives & breathes drawing/painting. DD#2 has tried multiple years to win the same contest including the year dd#1 won it and has never done so.) It was worth $3000 which was deposited in a 529 account to grow until she needs it.

The same people who sponsor the state art contest also sponsor photography contests and essay contests. The awards are $500-2,000 or so for the 3-4 (or more) winners of each contest each year. In most cases, you have to live in the state to be eligible to participate, but not always.

The only way I could make my "no" vote show up was by also clicking on the $500 and below option.

Outside Scholarships = No

I spent MANY hours researching "outside" scholarships, and DSs did not meet the eligibility requirements for ANY, in order to be able to apply. :( Also, DSs were unable or unwilling to put in the hours to create the required essay, video, or project for "outside" scholarships that only had that type of requirement. So "outside" scholarships were a bust for us.

Inside Scholarships = Yes

Both DDs were awarded "inside" scholarships at the local Community College (CC) -- one for a good ACT/SAT score and GPA, the other for being the only male in a female-dominated AAS field (Interpretation for the Deaf).

DS#1 went on to also land a renewable transfer scholarship for half-tuition at the 4-year university. That was for the high CC GPA. In his second year at the 4-year university, he also applied for/landed a partial tuition leadership scholarship, for leading a dorm Bible study and helping with just a few student activities (most dorm move-in -- lol) during the semester.

It's not fixed at this point.  To fix it you need to put a "no" option with your second question.  ;)

Mine all won outside scholarships, but only one of those was for 4 years.  It was roughly $5000 per year, so saved us 20K - nothing to disdain (we very much appreciated it) - but also not enough to cover costs in itself.  I wasn't sure in your second question if you meant annually or total.  I voted as if it were total.

The other awards mine got were $500 and $1000 one time gifts/scholarships.

The larger one came from a local organization that was purposely set up to offer scholarships anonymously.  Our school had the applications for it, but it was open to homeschoolers.

Three of the $500 awards came from a youth group my kids belonged to from middle school on.

The only $1000 award came from school and was won my my b&m lad.

Not my son, but I did. It's for college sophomores or above and is state specific. You can get amounts up to 5k for the year. It has a late deadline and notification, June for the upcoming school year, and notifications are not done until the end of July. So it's not a scholarship you will know about until after other financial aid comes in.

Ds received the $2,500 one-time award from National Merit. He also was offered a $10,000 per year, renewable for four years, merit-based scholarship from our home state (Department of Higher Education). This state program is good at any institution in our state, whether public or private. It required that one maintain full-time status and a certain GPA to be renewed. He did not choose to go in-state, so didn't *receive* it, but it was offered. My father-in-law thought he'd be able to get it and use it at Stanford! I wish!

Ds1 Navy ROTC scholarship. Full tuition including fees, uniform, books and monthly stipend. Will require several years of active duty after graduation.

Leadership scholarship from the corps alumni at his school. $12000 spread over 4 years. Amount is lower in early years and goes up each year. Not sure if this counts as outside.

Ds2 Navy ROTC scholarship. Same as above, however his has specific academic requirements that are different.

National Merit Scholarship. $2500

2nd place in an essay contest $250 and publication.

$500 from iirc the Navy League near his ROTC unit.
