G5052
My oldest signed with the National Guard today. He goes to processing in two weeks, then basic in January. He's going to take off the spring semester for basic training, and then of course he'll have training for his speciality. He'll be gone for six months. SNIFF! KarenNC
Good luck to him! My daughter's best friend is currently in basic with the National Guard then will go on to specialty training and jump school before coming back for college locally. She wants to do military intelligence.
Lanny
Congratulations to your DS. I think it is better to be in Basic Training during the Winter. I did that. It could be hotter than heck during the Summer and that would be much tougher.

G5052
He's indeed in and leaves the end of January. He ended up with a different MOS than we had hoped for. Apparently end-of-year signings are prone to that. A lot of people want to start 2018 in the National Guard. If he had been willing to go to basic in the fall, he would have come out with what he wanted, but the goal was to have him take off the spring semester into part of the summer and then be able to continue college in the fall. He's a junior, and getting the courses lined up was going to be a problem. We also didn't want him to take off more than one semester. He was assigned to a company 30 minutes away that has multiple specialities that he's interested in. The goal was to get a reasonable commute. He got excellent bonuses though and will be fast-tracked for officer training. He'll be home in early July.
