Please help with an overview of Engage NY for middle school

Recommended Posts

We moved to New York last March and I have a 7th grade son and 3rd grade daughter who are now doing Engage NY math.

For my 3rd grader it seems similar to what my older son did his he was in 3rd grade.

Last year the end of 6th grade seemed like what he had been doing (they ended up covering things in a different order, so the end of 6th grade math was a review for him, but he missed positive/negative numbers, which I have gone over with him and he understands now, plus they did do a review this year).

But now in 7th grade -- to me they are doing Algebra. I don't understand why he is doing Algebra or pre-Algebra in 7th grade when he is in regular math; and so to me this means he is on the track to take Algebra in 9th grade and Geometry in 10th grade.

It is fine day-to-day, I go over his assignments with him and I bought a pre-Algebra textbook that we can look things up in the index and he can review the textbook instruction.

Well he also seems to be jumping all over the Pre-Algebra textbook.

It's not that I don't like it -- I just don't know where it is going.

Is there going to be a lot of review? Are there going to be a lot of topics that aren't pre-Algebra?

I have tried to look at websites and I can't tell.

The other issue is -- it seems like a lot that I did in "Algebra" class when I was in school, is now bumped down into lower classes, and then "Algebra" now is more advanced? Can anyone compare to the kind of sequence I had 20 years ago of: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trig and Analytic Geometry, and Pre-Calculus?

My son seems to be covering the same material that I covered in Algebra I, but I didn't take a pre-Algebra class so I don't understand exactly how pre-Algebra fits in; from what I have seen it just look like Algebra to me.

Thank you, that is better than what I had been looking at!

Well -- it looks like he is going to do stuff earlier than I did, but then polynomials won't be until Algebra.

So it looks like a lot less is crammed into Algebra class, compared to when I took it.

I can live with that, it seems like Algebra won't be too bad.
