DawnM
There are 3 state colleges offering lower tuition for in-state and very low cost for out of state (compared to what it used to be.) http://www.uncp.edu/news-events/nc-promise/what-parents-students-should-know Please note these are 3 NC state colleges that traditionally have had trouble keeping students, based on location, etc.... But we have a friend's daughter at Western Carolina and she loves it. It is just in a remote location. Western and Elizabeth City are on boarder areas, which makes it a good option for those who live right over the boarder. Just thought I would share.
katilac
We discovered some great schools in both of the Carolinas, and some of them have good scholarship opportunities, but they the wound up being too far away for my kids' taste. And too cold, lol.

teachermom2834
Tennessee Tech also offers a reduced rate for students within 250 miles of Cookeville TN. That includes a small part of NC but would include many students in the southeast. Combined with stackable scholarships for ACT scores it looks like a good deal.

I found out yesterday that East Tennessee has a similar deal.
teachermom2834
ACT scholarships are a little more generous at ETSU than Tenn Tech, too. That might be a very good deal for some students.
