Jen500
So both of my dss were selected for verification. (They had the asterisk on their SAR EFC) They've applied to a few schools already, and so far one ds needs to verify at 2 schools. My question that I can't find the answer to is--does this mean they will both have to go through verification at every school they apply to? And I used the DRT tool when I filled out the parent part of FAFSA. One school wants the IRS tax transcript---I'm curious, wouldn't they already have that information from me using the DRT?
Julie of KY
I used the direct retrieval tool last year and still had to upload a physical copy of our taxes.
MarkT
What is FAFSA verification?
G5052
What is FAFSA verification? More proof that you didn't lie on the FAFSA. I haven't experienced it, but I know several locals who have. The ones I know had to provide a tax transcript and several other documents.
JanetC
I believe you will need it for each school that is creating a financial aid package for you.
ThisIsTheDay
Ugh. We were selected for verification from year one and have had to verify every single year since. With both kids. And because we had a fraudulent tax return filed under our names a few years ago, we are now unable to upload our tax returns, and we have to call a special number for fraud victims each year to get certified copies of our tax returns. And THIS is why I dread FAFSA every year.
lisabees
I have been selected for verification in the last couple of years. There was a drastic change in my financial situation; I was also not able to use the DRT because I filed "married, filing separately." At least, that's the way I remember it! ETA: ThisIsTheDay: I liked your post, but I didn't really like it! ;) Edited November 25, 2017 by lisabees
Hilltopmom
We were selected too
JanetC
The federal government decides who needs to verIfy, but the school actually does the work. For a freshman appplicant, that means all the schools that are writing up a financial aid package.
Alessandra
I uploaded a PDF of our taxes for a college that asked it of everybody. They said it was ok to leave off ss#. So my question is -- does verification mean you have to get taxes from IRS, or do you send your own pdfs? It's my first time for college applications. I accept that privacy is gone, but I am very apprehensive about having ss# out there. Edited November 25, 2017 by Alessandra

jpinAL
Two of my three kids were selected this year but only for dependent verification. This is the first time in 5 years that we were chosen but it might be because there are 3 in college next year.
LisaKinVA
Oh yay... something else I get to look forward to (just going to expect this is coming once we move back stateside and our taxed/untaxed income changes wildly.)
JanetC
The verification rate is apparently high this year -- https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2017/11/28/colleges-puzzled-by-surge-in-fafsa-verification-requests/?utm_term=.bfe48a08e633
RollerSkatingMama
What do you all think is the best way to submit the verification information to colleges? The letters requesting the verification worksheet and W-2s have just started rolling in, and though I have all the information ready, I've been unsure of the most secure way to submit it. I find it a bit surprising that they suggest e-mail. I really don't feel comfortable sending copies of my husband's, my son's, and my W-2s via e-mail since they contain all of our personal information, including SSN. I haven't figured out how to use our all-in-one printer as a fax machine, so I guess that leaves regular mail, though of course, the security of that is never guaranteed either! Should I send it with a signature required when the college receives it so I know they got it? I can't remember ever mailing something before that has so much identifying personal information on it. Opinions on this are much appreciated! Thanks!
JanetC
I would say fax or mail over email. Do copy shops still offer FAX services?

Julie of KY
I've had to do verification last year and this, but it's through IDOC. I've used the direct retrieval tool both years, but still have to verify.
JanetC
IDOC is separate. Some schools use IDOC to get documents from all students, not just those selected for FAFSA verification.
