HollyDay Posted October 23, 2017 Share Posted October 23, 2017 I was given a Bosch stand mixer for Birthday/Mother's Day last year. It is a wonderful tool but quite big and not the easiest to clean. Perfect for bread or large batch mixes. I do love it. But, do I want a hand mixer? Something for small batch recipes? And if so, which hand mixer?? I definitely use it a lot and I also have a stand mixer. I don't know that I truly need it as I guess I could use the stand mixer for everything, but I do use them both and if my hand mixer ever broke I would definitely replace it. Posted October 23, 2017 Share Posted October 23, 2017 I like the power of my KA stand mixer so much that I can't bring myself to use my hand mixer anymore, even though it's easier to clean up. One thing I still use, though, is my stick blender. That's fantastic for making refried beans or blendering soups right in the cooking pot--no hot liquid transfers anymore. A hand mixer wouldn't work for that stuff, and so I'm really glad to have my stick blender. I use it more often than the big stand mixer and no matter how badly I treat it it will not die. I'm probably going to give the stand mixer to my sister when we move in February but I'll definitely be taking the little hand mixer with me, or maybe I'll donate it and get myself a new one. As the kids grew up and started being gone for dinners....then moving out...I found that often my stand mixer was too much. I use mine a lot, especially for soups where I want to blend in the pot instead of ladling into a blender then pouring back into the pot. Be sure to get something that has a true soft start like a kitchenaid seven speed. Then it backfired because she went to college and took her things with her. :D But yeah, you could buy someone else in your house the immersion blender and yourself the hand mixer. Or just one or the other. I use my immersion blender a ton, but I make smoothies and puree soups a lot. I must be weird. I use my hand mixer (kitchen aid) most of the time rather than my big Kitchen Aid, mainly because I'm too lazy to hulk around the big one. It's even in the right spot and I don't, go figure. Do you do things with a mixer a lot? If you do, it will be nice, sure! It's also nice to collect knives or a new cutting board. You could get one really nice knife for about the cost of the hand mixer. That's how I collected mine, one at a time. Actually that's how I then collected knives for dd, one at a time... To me, I get a TON of use out of a good knife. That's more useful to me than a hand mixer. But yeah, whatever you do a lot of, definitely. DawnM Posted October 23, 2017 Share Posted October 23, 2017 I wanted a KA hand mixer, but DH couldn't find one so he bought me a Cuisinart. It is fine, but I still wish I had gotten a KA. We have a large KA stand mixer, but it doesn't fit under the cabinets so it either sits to the side taking up extra space or we have to put it back in the cupboard, which is a pain. I am considering trying to trade it with someone who has a shorter stand mixer that has the pop up top, but I know those aren't as powerful or large. At this point, that may not matter so much. It's plenty powerful for most of my mixing jobs. Exactly the same! Lol. 23 years and it's still a workhorse. :) I do have a KA stand mixer but I never, ever use it. I do use an immersion blender quite a bit, but for different things than the hand blender (soups vs cookies). It really depends on what you make, and how much.
