Would this affect scholarships?

Long story short (and it is a really long story)......my son applied to this school on the 24th of September.  He was accepted the first or second week of October.  He also received a merit scholarship at that time.

He has applied for 2 more scholarships and we don't know how much he will get, but we do expect something.

Does it hurt his chances of an amount if he accepts before the offers come in?

I know that might sound strange, but I keep reading of people who get all their scholarship amounts/offers and don't enroll and then the school comes back and offers more to get them to come.

We don't have a lot of wiggle room due to the dates.  He would start Jan 7th.  We are meant to pay the dorm and enrollment fees by November 1st!

I don't need to barter for more, but I want him to get the max they are willing to offer now to come through.

This might be a really dumb question, but humor me.

I would guess you could hold off for another week to ten days, but it's probably unlikely to matter either way.

I assume that these two other scholarships are for this school? If the deadline to get in the applications for these scholarships is this month, then it's extremely unlikely a decision will have been made on those scholarships by Nov. 1st -- it seems to take about 6-8 weeks from the deadline for the committees to sort through all of the applications for awarding scholarships.

But that's just our experience with the 2 different schools our DSs have attended and for receiving scholarships. YMMV. Congrats on the scholarship he received! Warmest regards, Lori D.

You could be right.  Although the last merit scholarship came through in about a week.

But that may have been just the one.

Are the scholarships coming from the admissions dept or depts?  If from depts, I would doubt it.

I am not sure I understand the question.  The scholarships are all directly from the school if that is what you mean.  No outside scholarships.

I think sometimes it could make a difference, but you are probably okay accepting admission. That said, maybe hold out another week to accept?

We can wait past the deadline, and he can still go, but then I worry about getting the dorm of his choice.

I am telling you, our family never does things the conventional or easy way........ :hat:

You can actually pay the dorm deposit without accepting the school's offer.

I don't think I can.  You have to be logged in to pay the dorm deposit and you have to have paid the enrollment fee in order to have a log in.

So I am not sure how I can do that.

And on the website it says, "Once you have paid the dorm deposit, you will be able to log into your student portal and make a dorm preference request."

There is no student portal without the acceptance/enrollment fee.

That stinks! We were given a log-in to all of the schools as soon as she had acceptances.

That doesn't appear to be the case here.

Oh well.  We realize he won't get info on his scholarships in time for the Nov. 1 deadline anyway, and since we really want to be sure and get the right place for him (his own room), we feel we need to go ahead and accept and let the chips fall where they may.

That was the same policy and process for DS#1's college.
