Today I was watching a four year old. Cute kid. Anyway, he was singing, I was singing, we both were singing, which reminded me of a small disagreement in styles from when my own girls were in that age range. How do you do the motions for the Itsy-Bitsy Spider?

 

(And here I bet you thought all my random polls were about food! Well, here's how I'm going to combine those two concepts. I'm sure Spiders Georg would approve!)

My youngest is 23 and it's been a looong time since I've thought of this song. It took me a few minutes to go through it in my head in order to answer the poll questions. Because there is NO WAY I was going to actually do the motions with the room full of people watching the Cubs game.  But someone did ask me what I was thinking about because I had such a serious look on my face.  (As if the Cubs being behind again isn't serious enough!)

That's how I learned it as a child, but not how I do it as an adult, Ailaena! Because while lots of people did both sun-rising styles, I was the only one doing the rain-falling-up style in our preschool-with-adult classes.

I voted "other" for out came the rain.  Mine is a combination of the two poll answers:

Okay, I had to do it. I thought I did the arms in a circle above my head & rain fingers upward. I do the cross-arms in front of my body (if I understand your description correctly), but I don't do anything for the rain evaporating. I'm still doing the cross-arms bit when I sing that part. I'm sure y'all wanted to know that.

Using duolingo to learn French, we had a bit of fun with Google translate earlier today after a lesson about the word spider. Turns out there is no translation for "itsy bitsy", and the French pronunciation is cute. I had to settle for tres petite.

Probably for this reason, I don't do a gesture for "dries up all the rain" The sun coming out is also drying up all the rain.

 

ETA: The spider is itsy bitsy and I do the big arcs for the sun coming out.

I saw a really ridiculous version of the song on youtube recently. From what I remember, the song used relatively normal lyrics, but the images didn't match the song at all. For instance, when "out came the sun," the rain was still falling, and the spider just donned more and more scuba gear as the scene progressed, and he kept on climbing up the gushing "water spout."

I've heard lots of people sing eensy weeny, but I've never seen the other hand motions that were listed and I'm actually having a bit of a hard time picturing them.  :001_huh:

 

 

ETA: OK so I looked at youtube videos, and now I understand what "crossing your arms in swooping arcs" looks like — but it doesn't look like a sun, so I like my way better.  :tongue_smilie:

No your description is fine — I'm sure anyone who does it that way totally understands what you mean. I'd only ever seen "out came the sun" done by making a little circle with both hands and raising it above your head, or making a big circle with your arms (fingers touching above your head) — and that description probably doesn't make any sense to anyone who hasn't seen that version, either.  :laugh:

I do a sort of roll your hands over each other gesture for the drying part.  Like that 50s dance.  Here is a photo sort of:

Itsy bitsy spider

Circle for sun

Hands open, palms up and slight spreading hands from center outward. Sort of like gesturing, See how the rain has all dried up? I dunno, that's the way I learned it and that's how I sang it to my dc. I didn't even know there were other gestures for that.

 

The real question is, How does the Itsy Bitsy Spider go up the water spout? Thumb to pinky? Thumb to forefinger? Thumb to each finger, one at a time, in turn? 🤣

But Itsy Bitsy Spider is my 4yo's favorite song.  He likes me to sing all six verses while I'm rocking him to sleep.  So usually there are no motions. :)

"Out came the sun" we've done two ways. We usually sweep arms up from the sides with fingertips meeting somewhere near head-height. But sometimes we do the ASL sign for SUN. 

 

Swishing back and forth for "dried up all the rain."

 

I just asked my kids to do it to see what they remembered. My youngest did it in preschool last year so she did it different than I do. She climbed one hand up the arm of the other instead of doing the fingertips touching climb. She raised both arms above her head in a circle for the sun. She seemed to forget dried up so looked at older who did it the swishing way, so I'm not sure what she did in preschool.

I swish with the arms at the second half of "down comes the rain and washes the spider out" but then I go up with the rain fingers with the second half of "out came the sun and dried up all the rain."

If you do the swooping arc CORRECTLY, there is no time for some silly "dried up all the rain" hand gestures.

 

You simply bring your hands back together again in time to pantomime the ITSY BITSY spider going up the spout again.
